Hi,

CF was down all weekend while I migrated the whole site to a whole new server. Enjoy the new server and new speed.

Thanks Erwin! I wondered what had happened! I kept getting "page not available" for the last three days, until 10 min. ago.

My only question is, why could several other people connect and post as of 11:18pm Sat., but I couldn't get through until just now? Is it something involving my system/ISP, or a normal gradual-access kind of thing related to the upgrade or change of servers?

That's a timezone error - I fixed the timezone about 30 minutes after it came back online, and so the post times are wrong for the initial period.

CF may have intermittent outages for the rest of today as I haven't had time to optimize the server fully yet - I'm typing this from work, and I'm going to be at work for the rest of today. My main aim was to get the site back online, and it's back. Speed will not be optimal until later, as I continue to bring the server back to its optimum level.

Ok, got'cha Erwin. I'm really glad to see the "read all ****'s posts" feature back too! That's a real time-saver!
God bless you a whole bunch brother, for all your hard work and self-sacrifice to make this an even better Christian site!! :)

Two things (admittedly, I have not read the whole thread, but I have read four pages);

1. Why was there no major board-wide notification before the server switch? It would've put a lot of minds at ease and is just a matter of courtesy.
2. Is it just me, or do things feel slightly slower now?

Thanks, Erwin. ...... send some $ in to help pay for the upgrade.

Thank you and God bless you,
Allye

Are you managing to finance such upgrades from site supporter income: or do you need further funding for such one off investments.
If it were the latter, I wouldn't mind donating a couple of quid for share of such one-offs.

Could you let us know on that one.

Maybe even have one of these board-outside-the-church-fund-raising-barometers for one offs.

I can recognise when something has become a "service" in my life; and paying for service within means, isn't a problem.

Maybe you already have such an arrangement, and I haven't seen it.

I post on other boards where the poor guy whose driving it all, might be struggling to find a few tens of dollars to fund some component, because they have other commitments (say feeding the family), as well as funding their virtual baby.

Let me answer these questions first:

1. Because, truth be told, I was actually upgrading the server OS from one version to another, when it borked on me. :sorry: I basically killed our old server, and the site was offline anyway - not really by choice. Instead of restoring and fixing up the old server, I decided to upgrade and move to a brand new one. After all, we've been on the old one for over a year now. :) New hardware is always good. Usually, I do give people notice!

2. It may be slower because I haven't completely finished tweaking the new box yet. :)

I pay for the running of this site, including leasing the hardware, software, bandwidth etc. plus the domain names and all other costs, by myself, supplemented by the generous Site Supporter members like yourself.

This actual upgrade costs me a bit, because of many things including the fact that I had to pay someone to physically fix the old server in order for the transfer of data to occur. I'm not a rich man by any means, but I manage. I have to say that when CF was down, and I was running to all sorts of trouble in the middle of the night, I did contemplate throwing in the towel, and saving myself thousands of dollars a year, not to mention the hours of time and the amount of stress and anxiety. However, a still, small voice told me not to. ;)

Erwin, I am so glad you listened to that still small voice. :)
