If anyone directs you to a person, I would disregard them. You have direct access to Father God because of Jesus' work of the cross and by the power of His Holy Spirit.

Read the Book of John. Read it a couple times over. Ask Father to give you wisdom and insight. Spend quiet time in prayer in the morning and in the evening. Carve out some other time to read a chapter of Proverbs a day and a couple of chapters of the Psalms.

Ask God to help you understand the scriptures, He is faithful. When you start getting that understanding you will be encouraged and amazed.

Paul says in one of his letters, "Think on these things and God will give you understanding."

That's how He teaches you. Read the scriptures, think on them, and the Holy Spirit will begin to give you understanding.

That being said, fellowship with other believers is important, too, but you want to be careful with that. There is a lot of bad stuff happening in the church these days. Many have turned away from basic teachings, others who may seem to have solid teachings are abusing their authority for ungodly reasons.

One thing is for sure: Jesus is your teacher, and Father God is the greatest Father a person could ever have. You cannot go wrong directly pursuing Him, but be patient about getting understanding. Don't presume something is true unless it become clear through the scriptures. Hold a high standard for truth and you will find it.

True, AGTG! One needs to make the Lord Jesus first in their life and commune with Him in faith. Some Christians who are devoted to the Lord Jesus can be much help, but there are "apostates" in the world who take the name of Jesus, and corrupt it and His testimony for personal gain. Beware of falsehoods, Serenity! If you seek a church fellowship, be very sure it not only uses Bible verses, but studies the Bible thoroughly every week. I recommend you also see sound ministry at the site: www.biblecounsel.net for Bible-only teachings. Look up always, and stay close to God.

Hi beloved SerenityRiver! Don't worry about not being academically inclined, some of the books in the bible were written by fishermen! It was never meant to be a difficult book. Pray to God for wisdom and He'll reveal to you what you need to know. The people listening to Jesus' teachings often didn't understand His parables, but they went to Him all the same.

Seek Him and He'll let you find Him. God loves you :)

Hi there; the Gospel may be summarized in the words of John 3.16; the language is both simple and deep:

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Yes, good post. It's not academic complexity that counts, it's having the truth of God, from His Word, in our hearts by faith.

SerenityRiver,

Ask God to show you whatever it is you need to have assurance of salvation and then read the Gospel of John. No man can give you understanding of spiritual matters; only God can do that. I am posting a link to my testimony of how I found assurance of salvation & peace that is impossible to explain to someone who has never experienced that peace for themselves. Please take time to read my testimony, but be sure to read the Gospel of John & look to God for your answer. That is what I did and He did not disappoint me. Forty years ago He gave me peace, and I still have that same peace today.

You should check out Oral Roberts ministries. I personally got delivered from several health problems thanks to what Richard Roberts his son is doing, which is, also, Holy Spirit working through him. Then, when you are able to read, you can read the New Testament over and over like I did at first, and study some protestant teachers (my teachers were mostly Orthodox Christian because I was an Orthodox at the time, now I am a saved Charismatic Christian, and it was with the help of several saved friends that I am now saved). But if you would take advice from me -- and see the number of likes I have -- I can tell you that Christianity is very simple: just believe that Jesus is the Lord and call upon Him as Lord often, you will always have the Spirit, because only by the Spirit we can call upon Jesus as Lord. Try to keep conscience clear, because neglected conviction of our conscience quickly burns a hole in the wine-skin of our faith, and the wine of the Spirit can no longer fill the wine-skin to the top, keeping some "shame" uncovered, some lusts of our sinful side of our nature uncovered and therefore unatoned for: "See, I am coming like a thief. How blessed is the person who remains alert and keeps his clothes on! He won't have to go naked and let others see his shame". Only those who have a good garment will be let in: "He asked, 'How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend?' The man was speechless". There is a good verse about conscience: "holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith". So, you can see how it is good to always try to immediately repent to the Lord and receive his forgiveness by faith, or by faith thank Him for his cross, which will produce the same effect. This helps keep our conscience clear, and ourselves saved as a result, since the Spirit IS salvation, because Spirit is Eternal Life (John 6:63). "Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life". Our "works" here is the confessing part, as well as the work of keeping a clear consience, but note that it is not these work that save, but the OBJECTIVE FACT of whether the person has the Spirit at that moment. Meaning that me having the Spirit yesterday, may not mean I am saved now, since I may have lost the Spirit through neglecting to deal with convictions of God (sin can only harm if person becomes aware of it, see Leviticus 5:3; convictions of our conscience come only if God wants us to become aware of a sin we committed or are committing, so that we may repent, or make some deal with Him about it).

I'm very sorry to hear about the struggles (and particularly the past abuse :() that you face (and have faced) in your life. Praying for you.

As for reading the Bible, I'll second (or third or fourth ;)) pointing you in the direction of the Gospel of John as a great starting place. And as you read through it, if you have questions about ANYTHING you are reading, either call your pastor and ask him, or bring them right back here to CF and someone (or many someones) will most likely be able to help you understand whatever verse or passage you have a question about :)

Blessings to you in Christ! (Numbers 6:24-26)

I'm not so sure that reading something is the best way for the OP to proceed. Jesus created a fellowship (kingdom or church). I would get involved with a group of believers, and join them in a Bible study or other activity, but also in worship and service. If you're from a Catholic background, a Catholic parish is the obvious place to start. Or Anglican, since you're in the UK.

THIS^ is a very good idea  (unless you are homebound, of course). If you are homebound, pastors/priests/elders do regular visitations to people's homes, particularly for those who need to stay home. Also, you may be able to join or form a Bible Study that meets in your home (it can small, just 2-3 people can make a great Bible Study/Prayer Group).

My Bible Study meets where it does specifically because the daughter of the couple who live there is homebound.

You might also like to listen to Bible teaching on the Internet or radio, which can be very helpful in getting to know what the Bible teaches. Here are my favorite three. Just click on them to go and listen (or watch sometimes) if you'd like to. Plus, it's free :) The Lord used these broadcasts to make a profound impact on my Christian life, especially when I was a new Christian.

Renewing Your Mind - Dr. R C Sproul

Insight for Living - Dr. Chuck Swindoll

Grace to You - Dr. John MacArthur

Blessings to you in Christ! (Numbers 6:24-26; Jude 24-25)

maturity or growth requires involvement.

but before all that, a correct mindset which upholds scripture alone as your source of truth and authority. otherwise you'll find yourself in a maze of traditions and rituals irrelevant to your search for truth or loving christ.

then go find and involve yourself with a local church who believes just that. talk to people, always ask questions, always refer to scripture. pray, study, reflect, worship, ask forgiveness, serve, and express love and concern for others especially the sick, the weak and the helpless.

I'm very sorry to hear that.

I would recommend the New International Version of the Bible, or if that is also difficult for you, the New Living Translation.

Start with John, perhaps:

The best way to learn about Christ is the Bible.

I suggest getting a Bible in the New Living Translation. You can read this Bible online. It keeps the English simple so it is easy to understand. It is the Bible I started with.

After you have read a gospel, like Mark's gospel is nice because it is simple and short. John's gospel is good too.

Mark 1 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark+1&version=NLT

Then read Romans 8 through Romans 10.

Romans 8 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=romans+8&version=NLT

Then read Galatians.

Galatians 1 - https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Galatians+1&version=NLT

Those scriptures will teach you how you are free of condemnation and justified by God in Christ. They teach on the "good news" which is the gospel and the basis of our salvation.

hello EPHESIANS6:10-11,

I have 4 verses for you ...

Jesus says
"except a man be born again (of the Spirit), he cannot see (i.e. understand) the kingdom of God" (John 3:3)

and:
"the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said to you" (John 14:26)

So, like the disciples, you need to receive the Holy Spirit.

"they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance" (Acts 2v4)

Peter said (v39):
"the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call"

... that means you and me.

I and the people I am with have all received that and we all enjoy a daily 2-way relationship with Jesus Christ!

I hope you will contact our nearest group, regardless of where you live.
