  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I just really need help. I'm more then willing to help those in need, and I try to but I can't even provide for myself so it makes it really difficult to help others. I want to help others but I'm in a position where I really can't help others as much as I'd like because of poor finances.

Since trying to find a conventional job isn't working, I'm just trying to make a source of income via gardening. The soil around here is very poor, it's not fertile, thus not suitable for gardening. As a result I'm resulting to container gardening; it works, I've managed to harvest veggies via this method of gardening before. Unfortunately there are a ton of expenses to cover, which I can't afford. I'm not just doing so for fun, I'm doing so to try and make some source of income.

First off I'm not trying to be a mooch a freeloader etc. I have tried to find a job for two years in a row. Done everything you're supposed to; submitted applications, gone to what interviews I've received and followed up on status of applications. Nothing; all I've had is dead ends and/or no leads.

One thing that is working against me is my employment gap history that I haven't worked in years. However there is really nothing I can do about that it's simply cause of the poor economy.

Living in a small town doesn't help; it makes an already difficult situation harder. People who have lived here for ages get the jobs because of working there last year.

Most people want somebody who has experience, which unfortunately I don't have. They also want somebody who has a college education, which again I don't have; I've enrolled for classes but I won't get the degree for two years.

Unfortunately even then getting the degree is no guarantee of getting a job; doesn't change the fact that the economy is poor. I can't just relocate to a place where the economy is better. This requires getting a job where I live now, to save money. I've basically looked anywhere and everywhere for a job.

I'll take any position, any hours, work in any sort of field so long as it isn't something illegal and/or immoral (selling drugs, being a prostitute, etc.)

I don't know for sure.

Move?

One lesson I once heard decades ago has always stuck with me. Like some Jewish guy who had to go & pay taxes to Caesar at Jesus' birth, we may not even know why God's moving us around. But if it's this big a problem, maybe it needs considering that God really wants us to move when He's forcing the issue on us.

This first statement is preemptive; I'm not just making assumptions I'm basing this on 2 years in a row of trying to find a job where I live (and the surrounding area).

Half the people who offer the advice of 'move' and 'just keep trying and you'll get a job eventually' fall under one of these two categories:

*They have a stable job with reliable income (as in they're not working two to three menial jobs and just barely scraping by to provide for themselves)

and/or

*They live in a place where the economy is decent enough where there aren't 50 people lining up for one position. I didn't say great I said decent; the unemployment rate in the state where I live is one of highest nationwide.

It used to be that people were willing to train somebody and take a chance on somebody with no experience if they had other things to offer....such as potential in the field and/or job that they're thinking of entering (by potential I mean you have talent doing so and/or experience). If you don't have experience, but it's not professional, it means jack unless the experience is professional.

It used to be you have an interview and you're shoe-in for getting the job; now you have to get a 'follow up interview' after the first interview to even be considered.

I'm going to college to take computer courses, to attempt to get qualifications. Unfortunately the economy where I'm located is so bad, that even getting qualifications, although it will increase the possibility of getting a job, doesn't change the fact and reality that the economy where I live is horrible.

Thanks to the stupid government going into debt and not being able to budget properly, there is no money to create new jobs; because of their screw up, selfishness, and being corrupt, I and many of other people who did nothing wrong (but are just trying to provide for themselves) are suffering.

I've tried to go to a local tempo agency (employment agency) but nothing. You have to exhaust all the resources they have before you can even start to apply for a job. Basically the stupid beauracratics which are supposedly to help you find a job aren't helping at all, they're just being a hindrance.

How can I find a job, if I try and try and try, follow up, go to interviews, but there are no jobs to be found? I've done all of what I just listed.

I have no connections with local employers and/or employers that live in areas of the state where the economy is better (which is namely the southern and central area of the state, which I'm nowhere near)

I don't know anybody who would be willing to carpool to a job, I just haven't lived here long enough.

First off moving isn't an option. In order to move I have to save up money so I can afford to move. I have no source of income. The way the economy works in a place with small towns is in order to have a shot at getting the job, you've basically had to lived there your whole life. People hire the people who worked for them the previous season; they won't go out and hire new people, if they already have people to work for them.

They already know those people have qualifications and experience working for them, due to previous experience working with them the previous season; they also know the person is reliable, has good work ethic, etc. It saves them time and money, and they don't have to train somebody new.

2nd, I haven't just limited my search to my local town. I've looked in the neighboring towns.

3rd the transportation system here is HORRIBLE. This is something that is beyond my control. Due to precarious road conditions in winter because of where I live, I can't work in the winter, or my hours would be severely cut.

Since people want somebody with reliable transportation this puts me in a jam; employers just automatically assume that because you're relying on public transportation to get to your job and/or because you don't live in the town where their place of business is, you don't have reliable transportation.

The bus only runs until about 5:00 p.m., so if I had to work a job that required evening shifts on a regular basis, it would make it difficult to
work there.

I don't drive, I have no license; even if I did, as stated before I have no source of income, thus I couldn't afford car payments, insurance, and gas.

I can't even go to one of the towns because whether or not the bus will go there is hit-or-miss; even if it were to go to the town, since it's considered out of the county I live in, they only go there twice a week. The bus doesn't even run on Sundays.

The larger towns where people are hiring more ,they're so far away from where I live, that I can't work there. By this I mean it's not merely further away from where I live then I'd like, thus due to the inconvenience, I refuse to work there. I mean that due to the poor public transportation system it is not feasible for me to get to my job there.

Have you considered selling your stuff (or giving it away) and hitchhiking to a city with decent public transportation? If you work at a restaurant, you can get free food - plus cities usually have soup kitchens and homeless shelters until you can save enough to afford a room at the Y.

Since you are able to post to this forum you have access to the internet. You should begin an internet search for jobs. Don't move until you have successfully landed a job. I have been able to find employment several times and the last two jobs had communication which began on the internet.

May God bless you as you look for employment. Remember, God loves you more than you can imagine! Daily ask Him to show you what you should do.

Have you considered selling your stuff (or giving it away)

Never tell a musician to sell their stuff. Won't happen.

A good friend of mine who plays the drums donated his kit to a church when he was leaving the country for a year. I'm still upset he did that.

Well, I don't want to suggest something extreme but... Canada has plenty of jobs and plenty of room.

I can speak only for Winnipeg and other major cities surrounding it (Selkirk, Brandon, Steinbach, Gimli) but there's always been a wealth of jobs for motivated people. I've worked in retail, heavy duty and menial cleaning, customer relations, auto body, various arms of the service industry, and a few others and I don't even have a high school diploma. Employers here want results, they're willing to train good people to generate those results.

Wage isn't that bad either, 10.25 minimum with another increase coming, I think.

I do not know if this helps, or not. You sound like you are in a difficult spot. Attitude is everything.

I am a guy, so some of this may not apply.

When I was in your spot, I did many things.

One, I got a job with ManPower, Office Temps, ADIA and a few others. I would take the 3-11 shift. That left my days open to look for permanent work. I was offered permanent work from time to time by some of my temp employers.

I did have a car, license, insurance, etc. That really helps. I taught myself how to do my own car repairs and maintenance. That saved bundles. It also gave me confidence. I could buy a car for $500 and know that even if it needed work, I would be ok.

I had roommates. That saved bundles.

I once packed up everything I owned and moved to Phoenix. I got a job driving a taxi there in two days. I moved out of the KOA a week later and got an appt. with roommates. Slept on the floor. I found furniture by driving around on trash day or going to a thrift store. Thrift stores are wonderful. You can negotiate the price at a thrift store by the way.

I made about 50 to 100 a day. I worked about 15-17 hours a day, 7 days a week. I took off to attend church. I didn't have a life other than driving, but I made a bunch of money fast. The time to work a cab in Phoenix is WINTER. I quit the week after Easter. No more customers. Only work the airport. All your customers have to go through a security check, so it is much safer. No accidents either.

I worked as a lumper for awhile. I would hang out at truck stops and look for bedbuggers - moving vans. I charged $10 to $15 an hour. More in June, less in winter. Mostly people move in June. Very hard work. Plenty of money in summer.

I once worked getting people to sign petitions. That was sort of fun. You meet people, ask them to sign your petition. Pay was 50 cents per signature.

I once took a train to Florida. I walked on a construction site and got a job instantly. I started by cleaning up stuff, they had me pounding nails in a week. Stayed at the KOA, again.

There is always the Armed services. Coast Guard has a wait list, shorter if you want to be a cook.

Hope it helps.

There are work opportunities overseas if one is single and willing. My daughter (26 now) after getting her teacher certificate and not finding a job in the US went first to Chile and is now in Taiwan. If you think a teaching certificate in required , you would be wrong. In fact some of the companies prefer to hire without any teaching background. The pay is not great but it is OK and if one is a christian it is a great opportunity to spread the word. May be that is your calling.

That is a really cool idea. I met a girl once who did that. She stayed a year overseas. Saw the country, made lots of friends, had an adventure. She told be that mostly her students wanted to learn vocabulary. She taught them about a hundred common phrases and then focused on vocabulary.

She did not actually work for anybody. She just went over there, joined a few organizations, put her name out there, and started a class out of her apartment with people she met and friends of friends.

She did say that in Japan they only took people with teaching certificates. So Japan would be out, if that is still true.

I also wonder about Disney. I have seen all kinds of people working at Disney. Bet if a person could get to Orlando they could get hired fast.

I also wondered about National Parks. They have summer jobs. It would be an outside job at a beautiful area.

If you already know how to drive, I would look into truck driving. There are many females driving out there. Driving school is three months. After that you start off at around 30 K a year. Of course you need to go to a school which has decent placement opportunities. Schools contract with local companies to produce students. Find a school with lots of contracts. Our school locally has a 99% placement rate.

I once worked for a guy who went to a local repair shop and convinced the mechanic/owner that he could get him some business. The mechanic agreed. My friend fronted the money and printed up a bunch of attractive deals - discounted oil change, discounted coolant change, free auto inspection, discounted this and that. Basically, he got a coupon from a competitor and copied it. The mechanic had to agree to do the labor for free. The potential customer had to buy the oil, coolant, filters, etc.

It was a mechanism in which some potential customer could get to know a mechanic. Then, when someday the customer's car broke down, they would remember the mechanic and pay decent money for a real repair because they already had a relationship with him and knew how to find his shop, etc. Also, free tow was one of the incentives.

Then my friend went door to door and sold his discount card. He kept the money from the sale. He would start off asking for $35. He would discount it if necessary to make a sale.

I worked for him. He would take $20 out of every sale that I made. If I sold one for 35, I made 15, if I made a deal for 25 I kept 5, etc. He would give me a bonus if I sold more than 15 programs a night.

He also made up a T-shirt which said something like, "Ace Auto Repair" or something on it - the name of the mechanic's business.

Anyway, if you know any auto shops it is something to consider. You just have to sell the owner/mechanic on the idea, get the specifics of the discounts, get them printed and you are off. And, you make more money if you then hire people to go out and sell with you. Of course you have to train them for a night or two.

I am sure you can find all kinds of sales tips at the library or on the internet. Some people are naturals. Some need more training than others.

I read an article about some guy who did online quick, one time only jobs. For example, he would get paid ten bucks for taking a picture of a particular restaurant and beaming it it. He turned it into a full time career. He did thousands of quick jobs for very little money and made more than he did at his old job. I don't know what the demand would be in your area, but Google, Facebook, Tripadvisor, etc. need people on the ground to get around and do recon. for example.

Ultimately you can make a killing if you start your own business. I am not sure about what you are doing now, although your expenses sound like you are having a hard time of it.

I good start is to subscribe to magazines which cater to that crowd and read up. If "Inc" is still around, that is an example. I read about one guy who sold a tape of "office sounds". He figured that many people were like him, and had a business out of their homes. He had a guy hang up on him once because the customer heard "home" sounds in the background and did not wish to do business with a "home" based business. So, he made a sound recording of an office, and sold the recording of office background noise.

If you can do that you can make a killing. All you really need is creativity and you can make a bunch of cash. To pull it off you need to dream. If you subscribe to that genre of magazines, or find them online or at the library, you are off and running. Read a few, get a few ideas.

I heard about a mother/daughter team that was making $50 K a year off E-Bay. They bought at garage sales, marked it all up 100%, advertised it on E-bay and made a living. Of course, they picked stuff they thought they could sell, so, they probably had some talent for picking pricey garage sale junk.

I just noticed that I am getting carried away. ADHD and all that. Sorry. Brings back memories. Some of the best times of my life were when I was young, inexperienced, and generally broke.

You don't realize it now, but in your future expect to have fond memories of this time when your life was more of a fight, and you had to watch your pennies. Your decisions now carry serious weight. Mistakes cost you big time. You are likely finding more life in any given hour than the rest of us are finding in any given week. Memories of overcoming hardship are priceless. They help build your soul.

I read occasionally on this site depressing stories of pastors feeling like they are failing, losing their call. Stories of churches splitting. My own denomination has all kinds of drama these days. God does not think like us, though. For God, there is no downside, no depression, no hopelessness. God is filled with hope, and love. You are a part of God's body, and God has a great future in store for you.

General note, in my experience, employers are not in the charity business. They do not want to hire people to do them a favor or to help them get a leg up, unless they know you or are a friend of a friend.

They want to hire qualified people who are honest, come to work early, return from breaks on time, stay late, and have a can-do, positive attitude. They want you to make them some money.

My general attitude was that if I had some kind of money coming in I was not desperate. I learned the hard way that applicants who were desperate were a real turn off. I learned not to act desperate. The best way to do that for me was to have even a poor, temporary job. I found that if I had cash in my pocket, I was not desperate. Potential employers could feel my confidence, and consequently, my potential worth to their business. So, "Shine bright like a diamond".

Living in a small town doesn't help; it makes an already difficult situation harder. People who have lived here for ages get the jobs because of working there last year.
Then maybe you need to get out and go where the work is. You can always go back to the small town for your vacation and maybe your weekends. I talked to a guy once that went up to Alaska back when they were building the pipeline. In two years he made enough money to start up a little restaurant that he had always wanted. I use to stop in there to eat and we talked a lot about it.

I'll take any position, any hours, work in any sort of field so long as it isn't something illegal and/or immoral (selling drugs, being a prostitute, etc.)
I am sure there is lots of extra jobs people can get. Cleaning, yard work or whatever. Problem is they want to price themselves out. I know people that will not work for less then $50 an hour. So I just wait for someone that is willing to work for $10 an hour. That is getting to be more rare now a days. As people just do not want to work anymore. I remember when I was in high school I would work all Saturday at a Car Wash for $10. Only enough to buy gasoline for my car for the week. I use to work hard remodeling, repairing and maintaining property and I did not get paid much. But thing were not falling apart like they are now. People do not take care of things like they use to. Cities like Detroit are burned out and just a ruin of a city. People do not want to work, or if they do work they want paid to much money. Sometimes you got to work to make the world a better place to live and just to improve your life and don't worry about how much money you make. Actually, you may not understand this, but you could go out and work for free and God would bless you and take care of you and provide for you. They say in Heaven there is no money. Just an abundance of everything. If you have something that someone wants, they are glad to give it to them there. Because they already have so much.

Find an older retired person and ask them if they have a little bit of work for you to do. Sometimes as people get older they can not do as much for themselves anymore and are happy to hire someone to help them. They try to get by as best they can, just waiting for someone to offer to come along and help. So it really comes down to asking God to open your eyes to see what needs to be done and then just doing it and trusting God to provide for you and for your needs. Sometimes older people just need a little bit of company and are willing to pay someone just to be a companion and just to come over for a little bit every now and then to talk and help them a bit. Like you they just do not know how to find someone to help them. Of course you got to be careful not to take advantage of them. This is for honest people. Sometimes the family gets mad because old people start to give stuff away they do not need anymore. The family gets mad they do not give it to them. Yet the family does not ever come around offering to help and they want to give it to the people that are doing what they can to make their life a bit more comfortable. I remember a friend of mine use to take good care of the older women next door. She would give him a lot of her stuff out of the China cabinet or whatever. He would sell it on Ebay and make some money and it all worked out just fine. In her case no one seemed to care about her stuff anyways. So that was not a problem. The doctors and the nursing homes do not seem to mind taking all of their money and all of their life savings. In fact my investment guy says it cost a LOT to get old and you got to save LOT of money for your retirement. So my guess would be there are lots of people that would be glad to find a honest person to help them with some jobs here and there. They are really just waiting for someone to come along to offer to help, looking for work.

They use to talk about how the hobos would go from house to house. Willing to work for food. I know people that stand in a gas station with a empty gas can. They say they forgot their wallet, could you just give them a dollar or two to get enough gas to go home and get their wallet. If they think your for real a lot of people will give you five or ten bucks and be happy that they are able to help. That is getting into begging and scams. But I just bring it up to show there are a lot of ways to make money. That you most likely will not go to jail for. I know people that walk into restaurants or fast food and say they are broke and do not have any money. could they sweep up or do an little work to get some food. A lot of times they will stuff food in a bag and give it to you for free. You do not have to go hungry in Ameria. Lots of people more then happy to help you out. The problem is the people running scams trying to take advantage of the generosity of others.

I agree with the idea of finding some stuff to sell. If you don't have much then maybe you can find some stuff somewhere.

Finding stuff you can sell through someplace like eBay is a great way of making extra money. You might have to read some books and learn how to sell, but it can be done.

If you do decide to do something like selling on eBay, then watch your back by being aware of the many different types of scams that are out there so that you can protect yourself.

Remember the old saying if something looks too good to be true then it probably is.
