I am currently studying Mechanical engineering. i attend a methodist church and was secretary then vice-pres. then president of the young adult group.
I also lead bible study for a different church's youth group and am a firm believer of God. REcently i went to Korea and took a class on the new testament. I REally enjoyed it. during my time in korea my students from the bible study in NYC were always asking me to come back and lead again. they loved my bible studies. I never wrote the bible studies i just used bible study books and just added my own things sometimes. and when giving christian advice i usually use things from sermons i have heard before. I really love doing bible study and giving sermons. and have developed a huge heart for young adult and youth group. in korea i felt as if I want to study seminary since i Enjoyed the new testament course so much. so for the 3rd time in my life now i am considering becoming a pastor. this is now something i KNOW i want to do. however, i do know that this is not my choice this is a choice that God must make. also i have some doubts: 1st being im the only member in my family that is a follower of christ and because of that endure critisism every week from my family. 2nd is that I feel i dont live up to the pastor Image. for instance, i dont read the bible everyday, or do QT's everyday, and i listen to cecular music and watch cecular T.V. shows.
but I really want to do this so that in my generation that i can serve God
by doing something i love. I still havent changed my major or anything because i am still deciding. I am in my 3rd semester of college and need a pastors advice please help me all advice will be well accepted

If you really feel led by God to go in that direction then it's best to obey Him.

One sure way to start is to develop a solid daily routine of prayer and study. When I first wake up I read 1-3 chapters from my Bible and spend time in prayer. Besides beinga good practice for any Christian it helps us deal with family stresses you mentioned and it helps us know His voice...which brings us back to listening to Him and knowing if He is calling us in a specific direction.

BTW, you don't necessarily have to go to college to be a pastor. A lot depends on your denomination and the needs of the church. I would suggest spending some time talking with your own pastor about what you beleive God is telling you.

It is possible that you can (and should) finish school in the program you have chosen and work in that field. Many pastors have regular jobs to support themselves and their families.

Your entertainment choices are your choices. Listen to how God convicts you according to these personal choices.

God bless
Jay

PS I just got my local ministers license and have started working towards ordination in the Church of the Nazarene.

Goceman86,

Blessings on you as you seek to discern God's call in your life.

If you go to your United Methodist pastor and discuss the possibility that you might have a call to ordained ministry, s/he will give you a book called "The Christian As Minister". This book contains a lot of good help for people who are in the very beginning of the discernment process, and will help you figure out whether your call to ministry is a true one.

Grace & Peace to you,
Anne

After reading your two posts may I suggest the following. You are young so there is no need to make a quick decision as regards your future. Finish your mechanical engineering studies, that is where you are at now in your life and it is an opportunity that God has given you to prepare for the future. As you continue to study, do read and study the Bible, read Christian books and that will help you grow in knowledge of doctrine etc. It will also help you understand the differences between denominations, which are usually form rather than doctrine. As you grow in knowledge you will also be better equipped to lead the Bible studies.

There are many ways to serve the Lord. Perhaps studying the N.T. course and being told how those who attend the Bible Studies missed you was like an emotional charge for you and based on that you want to take a decision now. You have a ministry, continue with it, finish your studies and God will lead you in His will.

I don´t fully understand when you say that you really love doing Bible Studies and giving sermons but also say that you aren´t consistent in your personal reading of the Word. A pastor needs to spend time in the Word and alone in God´s presence to receive from Him.

Your friend should speak with a Full Gospel pastor about the beliefs on speaking in tongues in that denomination.

Every blessing.
