Why is there such a cognitive gap between humans and other species? Yes, I know they can use sticks to fish out bugs, but we are exploring the outer reaches of the universe and communicating instantaneously around the globe.

Why did it take us so long? We've only been doing that in the last 50-100 or so years - what about the 4.5 billion years before that?
