  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Does anyone have a system for storing all the documents I have collected and saved by months and years?

I've tried using the Dewey Decimal system, but I don't know, it doesn't seem to work.
000 – Computer science, information & general works
100 – Philosophy and psychology
200 – Religion
300 – Social sciences
400 – Language
500 – Science (including mathematics)
600 – Technology
700 – Arts and recreation
800 – Literature
900 – History, geography, and biography

thanks for your help

What format are your documents? i.e. pdfs, html, text...

Reason I ask is because what I do depends on using a couple different programs:

AJC Grep
AJC Grep, Windows Grep, file find, search and replace

AJC Active Backup
Continuous Data Protection CDP with AJC Active Backup, Instantly backup files you change on your PC and keep multiple versions to undo

No association with AJC company, just have used/liked their software for years...

Makes it very easy to archive your docs in a centralized location (single folder of your choice), and be able to very quickly find what you are looking for with a grep search.

Yeah, I want to be able to have all formats visible in every subject folder. I understand putting mp3 and videos in a separate partition, but anything else I would think should be apart of the access to all information pertaining to that subject.

Basically, I want to be careful not to miss some information when browsing (researching), because it was in another storage system because of its format.

The folder thing works for me. I usually keep one or two years ready and zip anything older into zips by year (2001.zip, 2002.zip, etc). This saves a lot of space and still keeps things easily accessible...
The problem here is that when I want to find a specific web page that I downloaded some time ago I have to go through several zips and probably several search tags, because I cannot remember the specific title.

See, what I am getting at?

Coming from a more common user position... have you noticed that newer Windows now searches words within documents?

It's not a developer-level tactic, but would find your hidden web page.

Also, Adobe Bridge lets you batch keywords to files.

I think it's great that you developed such a consistent system. I will stay out of the discussion now that I've presented my simplistic solutions.
