I didn't know that! I had one that I had bought at a gun show that had a 19" barrel but was obviously cut from a longer one. I don't have it anymore, but that might be a good thing, I guess. My current one has a factory-made 20" on it.

You can legally saw off any shotgun barrel you like, as long as:

1) the barrel remains 18 inches or longer
and
2) the entire gun remains 26 inches or longer

The information I found said 30 in overall?

Best not to alter any gun unless you really know what you're doing or even best have a gunsmith do it.

Had a gun one time that a gunsmith had worked on the trigger -- sweet.

My information was quoting federal gun laws; your state may have stricter laws.

What's worse,

One person killing 60 people,
or,
60 people killing 60 people?
One person killing 60 people is worse by far.
One person killing another is rarely random.
Hmm. 60 people dead either way - so that is a wash.

BUT:

One trial and one person locked up for life; vs 60 trials and 60 people locked up with free housing and meals for life?

The former us much less $$$ and headache.

That's what I thought was the case.
Many people like to have shotguns with barrels much shorter, like down to 10" or less. Of course, that means needing to pay the BATF $200 for the priviledge, but other than portability, I see no use in it. The power is greatly reduced while the muzzle blast is terrible. Mine is a 20". Seems like a good balance. I wouldn't go anywhere beyond 24" for something tactical.

I think the BATF concern on both lengths is concealment, although the smoothness of a shotgun barrel makes some difference. Rifles have a 16 inch barrel minimum, and the 26 inch overall minimum. And of course, pistols have rifled barrels, so that makes a difference to them.

If someone wants concealment, they'd be better off just getting an actual handgun rather than cut down a shotgun or rifle.
