  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I wouldn't like to see a woman do any of the jobs I've had. It would be defeminizing.

And what jobs are they?

And why does it matter if they are defeminizing? What does that even mean? Will their vaginas fall out or something? And your comment implies that a woman has to remain feminine, and that just isn't the case.

Maybe substantiate these feelings rather than just assume we'll agree: might help with making an "argument"

And is that because the female brain is inherently less suitable for mathematics, or is it because girls are, from a young age, discouraged from going into hard sciences and mathematics?

That would be a good subject to explore.

You mentioned STEM, and I offered the fact that women have trouble with calculus, for whatever reason, and many drop out because of it.
That's still a generalization that isn't considering 1) that many is relative to your statistics and 2) women may actually have a similar capacity for calculus as men, it's just the teaching method favors men and their learning styles

You make it seem like the reason is a mystery. It is not.

Girls discouraged from STEM? | Inspiring Science Education

Basically, girls are told that they need to do girly things, like fashion and cooking, and leave the big tough science and math and engineering stuff to the boys. That's patriarchy, that's misogyny.

Yeah, it would, yet it seems like you've just reached a conclusion that isn't necessarily borne out by the evidence or isn't considering other factors and just seems to fit the evidence to your preconception that women are meant to serve and submit to men

And what jobs are they?

Meat cutting, landscaping, tree trimming, construction, plumbing, electrical work, general building maintenance.

And why does it matter if they are defeminizing? What does that even mean? Will their vaginas fall out or something? And your comment implies that a woman has to remain feminine, and that just isn't the case.

There's a line I don't want to see them cross in that regard. That's just me.

They enroll in the sciences all the time and many are successful. Calculus however is a particular hurdle.

Regarding career norms women are making great strides. I just don't think their place is on an oil rig 100 miles from shore with 300 men.

I don't have that preconception. Women gave up that role nearly 60 years ago. The biggest problem today is the radical feminist movement, not subservience.

Women have trouble with calculus so many drop out of STEM programs.

Oh good grief. Some women have trouble with calculus. (So do some men). Many women don't, though. As I recall, at my (all girls) high school we had some very elite high achieving maths students who enjoyed the challenges of calculus (and all the rest).

I wouldn't like to see a woman do any of the jobs I've had. It would be defeminizing.

But whether or not you'd like to see a woman do something shouldn't be what governs women's employment opportunities.

The biggest problem I have as a woman today is neither feminism nor subservience, but cultural expectations around what I "should" do which are often entirely unrealistic.

And why does posessing a vagina make a person less suited for these jobs?

There's a line I don't want to see them cross in that regard. That's just me.

Thankfully, what you want when it comes to women can be safely ignored, because there isn't a woman on the planet who is obligated to live according to your opinion.

And another generalization with no real substance to qualify this boogeyman (or boogeywoman) you point to as the problem

As if women have some prescribed role they must follow merely because you say they must based on a book you find compelling due to its influence on culture (not necessarily always for the better overall)

Except that's making an hyperbolic example to somehow suggest all women want to do that rather than just break out of antiquated stereotypes

You seem to be ignoring the evidence.

A woman's place is wherever she decides it is.

Why not? Its not your place to decide! Also what is wrong with women working in abattoirs?? Women can work wherever they want to..

Don't negate the fact that many jobs require the 'muscle mass' that only men have.

I guess that you never met my aunt Rita?
The variation in muscle mass between men is far greater than the difference between the average man and the average woman.

Nevertheless.

Calculus I factors women out of STEM degrees

But whether or not you'd like to see a woman do something shouldn't be what governs women's employment opportunities.

I wouldn't hire a woman to do tree trimming work (maybe for office work though). Women's opportunities are affected by the requirements of the job.

The biggest problem I have as a woman today is neither feminism nor subservience, but cultural expectations around what I "should" do which are often entirely unrealistic.

You seem to have it all together, or are you advocating for others?

I don't think many women would want these jobs. But you can ask around.

Of course.
