  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I was having trouble with ἀχθήσεσθε, which is why I put it again after the verse like this: ἀχθήσεσθε?

I guessed that, which is why I replied in detail. :)

Since you're learning Greek, let me introduce you to this instead (mouse over the words for definitions and tenses).

And repeat after me: "grammar is fun"

Mr 15:16 And the soldiers led him away inside the courtyard to be presented, and they called together the whole Praetorian guard.
17 And they put purple clothes on him, and braided a wreath of prickle around about him.
18 And they began to humorously kiss him, saying Hail, King of the Judaeans!
19 And they beat his head with a cane, and spit upon him, and utterly prostrate1 they did obeisance to him.
20 And when they had sported him, they stripped him of the purple, and they put on his clothes, and led him out so that to fix him on a stake.

What do you think of "The Message" by Eugene Peterson?

Sometimes I get that "fingernails on blackboard" reaction to some of his stuff.

Sometimes I think "what was he smoking?" but sometimes I really like it.

As a way of translating loosely but hitting the reader between the eyes with the meaning, it can be very good. The NT is, after all, not written in fancy literary Greek, but in tell-it-like-it-is Koine, and sometimes Peterson captures the meaning very well.

Peterson's Eat This Book: A Conversation in the Art of Spiritual Reading explains where he's coming from.

One example:

ESV: ... they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles. When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.

The Message: Don't be upset when they haul you before the civil authorities. Without knowing it, they've done you—and me—a favor, given you a platform for preaching the kingdom news! And don't worry about what you'll say or how you'll say it. The right words will be there; the Spirit of your Father will supply the words.

I like "haul you before the civil authorities" as a loose punchy translation. I'm not quite so wild about "Without knowing it, they've done you—and me—a favor, given you a platform for preaching the kingdom news!" because it editorialises too much, but it does at least make the reader think about what "to bear witness before them" means.

I don't think that relates to anything we were saying, and it reflects an incorrect idea that Greek words have just one English equivalent.

If you are interested in the meanings of that verb, you may find Thayer's lexicon or the LSJ helpful.

Ouch!

Still, I can imagine places where the pastor might need to reword it that way.
