  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Right,
I looked closely at phronimoi, I didn't want to put "wise". I had "thinking" typed in and then changed it just before I posted. I like how you put "prudent". I liked "thinking" because of the phron in the word. (maybe "mindful") I didn't like "wise" because there is another word that means wise, sophos. So why translate 2 different words into the same english word? As you know, I really don't like it when translators do that, it can become misleading.

When I wrote "pure" for akeraioi, I was thinking of "unmixed". This is "pure grain alcohol" or "pure gasoline, not mixed with ethanol". Something like that, I wasn't thinking of "pure" as meaning something like good or saintly.

Thanks for your input, you really hit on the two problem words in that verse.

Is μαστιγωσουσιν related to masticate?

No, it's from μάστιξ (mastix) = whip, while "masticate" is from μαστιχάω (mastikhaō) = grind the teeth.

Literally, "Book of generations of Jesus Christ, Son of David, Son of Abraham."

γενεσεως is the genitive (i.e. meaning "of something") plural of "genesis" and so means "of generations" or "of births" or "of origins." A better translation is "of genealogy," since a genealogy is a list of births.

Since the absence of "the" in Greek implies "a," we could translate: "A record of genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham"

ἀχθήσεσθε

There is no "and placed" here. This is ἄγω (agō = lead or bring) with a future passive 2nd person plural ending = you will be brought.

You really need to know some Greek to play this game properly, but let me introduce you to this.

The point of this is for me to to learn greek. But thanks!

I was having trouble with ἀχθήσεσθε, which is why I put it again after the verse like this: ἀχθήσεσθε?
