Matthew 8:29

και ιδου εκραξαν λεγοντες τι ημιν και σοι ιησου υιε του θεου ηλθες ωδε προ καιρου βασανισαι ημας

And seeing called-out saying what us and you Jesus son the God come here before season examine us

When they saw him they called out, "What is between us and you, Jesus - Son of God? Have you come here before the time to examine us?"

και ιδου εκραξαν λεγοντες τι ημιν και σοι υιε του θεου ηλθες ωδε προ καιρου βασανισαι ημας
And lo, he cried and said, "And what is it to you, the Son of God, to come in this place, before the time to destroy us"

I have to explain βασανίσαι and why I translated as I did, since this is a proof-text verse for people who want to discover that God will torment people.

βασανίζω is usually translated torment. Strong's short definition for basanizo is "I torment, torture, buffet." Looking deeper at basanizo shows "I examine, as by torture; I torment; I buffet, as of waves." from basanos, of Oriental origin - a touchstone (a dark stone used in testing metals), hence examination by torture, torture.

But is torture really indicated by basanos? Does anyone torture metals when they test them with a touchstone? No, metal can't be tortured. So the idea of examining by torture is out, but the idea of examining something to determine it's quality remains. So I take from this that basanizo means "I examine" as if I am a judge or a detective examining a crime scene finding facts. This is what the demoniacs were afraid of, they didn't want the facts to come out. They knew they were guilty.

Rather, I think they were afraid of the refiners fire! They were mind altering spirits that possessed him, because Mark says:
restore to me, a spiritual frame of mind, 0 Son of God, of the highest? Beg your God, not to test my purity."
For he had said to him, "Come out verminous spirit out of the man".

Mal 3:2 But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like washed with alkali [white washed]

Rev 3:18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried out of the fire, that thou mayest be enriched; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
πεπυρωμένον ἐκ πορὸς tried out of the fire

Heb 9:4 Which had the golden incense-altar, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;

On the day of atonement, the incense-altar, like the most holy place, was sprinkled with blood.

ην δε μακραν απ αυτων αγελη χοιρων πολλων βοσκομενη

και ειπεν αυτοις υπαγετε οι δε εξελθοντες απηλθον εις την αγελην των χοιρων και ιδου ωρμησεν πασα η αγελη των χοιρων κατα του κρημνου εις την θαλασσαν και απεθανον εν τοις υδασιν

So he told them to go and they went off into the herd of hogs. The entire herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and perished in the waters.

The hogsmen fled and went into the city reporting all that had happened, including everything about the demoniacs.

And see all the city came-out into meet-with the Jesus and seeing him urged so-that depart from the region their

And look! All the city came out to meet with Jesus and seeing him, urged him to depart from their region.

και ιδου πασα η πολις εξηλθεν εις συναντησιν τω ιησου και ιδοντες αυτον παρεκαλεσαν οπως μεταβη απο των οριων αυτων
And see all the city came-out into meet-with the Jesus and seeing him urged so-that depart from the region their

And look! All the city came out to meet with Jesus and seeing him, urged him to depart from their region.

And, lo, everyone in the town came out to encounter Jesus: and seeing, they beseeched him how to be passing from their borders.

Matthew 9:2

και ιδου προσεφερον αυτω παραλυτικον επι κλινης βεβλημενον και ιδων ο ιησους την πιστιν αυτων ειπεν τω παραλυτικω θαρσει τεκνον αφεωνται σοι αι αμαρτιαι σου

And see brought him paralytic upon bed lying and saw the Jesus the faith his told the paralytic be-courageous child forgiven you the sins you

And behold, they brought him a paralytic lying on a bed and Jesus saw his faith and told the paralytic, "Be courageous child, your sins have been forgiven for you."

και ιδων ο ιησους τας ενθυμησεις αυτων ειπεν ινα τι υμεις ενθυμεισθε πονηρα εν ταις καρδιαις υμων

And seeing the Jesus the inner-passion their said that why you have-inside-passion-for evil in the hearts your

Mat 9:4 και ιδων ο ιησους τας ενθυμησεις αυτων ειπεν ινατι ενθυμεισθε πονηρα εν ταις καρδιαις υμων

Mat 9:4 And Jesus knowing their remembrance said, obstinate ones remember the wickedness in your hearts?
