  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

There is some scriptural clues when Paul says: is better to marry than to burn with passion... do you really reach the point of burning with passion if you touch? NO.
I don't know if it is picked up in Spanish, but that verse is addressed to women in the original Greek.

Okay, so I'm a single mother and I was in a relationship for ten years but that's over now. I never needed to touch before because I was always taken care of in that department but now I'm not. I've heard some people say its a sin and some say it isn't as long as I'm not watching porn or anything like that. I just don't want curses to fall upon me and my kids if I touch. It's just I have no intentions of being with anyone anytime soon so what do I do until then if masturbating is a sin? Please tell me what yal think.
Just do it!
Seriously, it’s not a sin. The porn thing, there are various moral arguments regarding that, but masturbation, in itself, is no big deal. No curses will fall upon your house! None.

Self-deception is one heck of a thing.
M-Bob
Yet who can be deceived, save the one who knows that they have the truth and all contrary is false?
Therefore the one likely to come out of deception is one who continue to look for it in themselves and not others.......

Where in the Bible does it say masturbation is okay?

How many pastors recommend this?

Self-control is one of the fruits of the spirit.

How many that touch also are into ponography?

This young Christian lady is on the right track. Of course others will wish to twist the scriptures or let their own self deception play out (once again.) Nothing new Under the Sun.

My friends started talking about this last year and I didn't really understand but now I guess I am catching up to them and wanted to talk about it but now they are all shy about it. So it's really confusing meeeeeeee :(
Hi Becca. I am not sure if anyone tried to answer your questions there in the teen folder, but I know there is a very anti-masturbation presence here on CF.

You have questions, and I am sure most of the teens do too. But I am not sure they have the experience to really answer you with wisdom.
Would you like to ask here?

You say that masturbation is God's gift to help people not fall into the sin of fornication, but it's only available for married people, namely the people who need it the least. It is not available for single people because they don't have a spouse to think of during the act of masturbation. One would think that single people would need this gift more than married couples.
Imo it is available for singles as well. And I agree with you that the singles need it more.

We are told in scripture to not add to the commands. If you want a reference, look at my siggy for one.

There is no command against it. And scripture is not shy in discussing sexual matters. So to me, the teaching against masturbation falls into this category:

Matthew 15:9
‘But in vain do they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’”

When I was single, I hated that it was married people, who supposedly could have relief from those urges at any time, that were telling me I could have no relief for the next several years. It was not fair. My research since then showed me they were wrong.

So IMO it is something to be enjoyed.

I am too shy to ask about that stuff here. I'm just annoyed my friend won't talk about it after she talked about it so much last summer. And I listened to her last summer and she won't listen to me at all.

The 7th commandment and Matthew 5:27-28. How much clearer can it be explained?
7th commandment? For that to be true, you need to prove that it is adultery.

For Matt 5.29 to be applicable you need to PROPERLY understand what was ORIGINALLY meant and understood by the original audience; and NOT what the ECFs and others have twisted it to mean.

The word "lust" there is epithumeo, which at its base is any strong desire. But more interestingly, it is also the word the translators chose for the Greek translation of the LXX for the 10th commandment, thou shalt not COVET. Indeed, where Paul quotes that command, the word is epithumeo.

So it becomes coveting someone. That command in entirety reads thus:

Exodus 20:17
“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

Coveting is wanting to take something that belongs to someone else and have it for your own. In this context that would be desireing someone to be YOUR OWN spouse or sex partner. And since our Lord used the word "adultery" instead of "fornication," the object of the desire MUST BE MARRIED to someone else.

The bar to violate Matt 5.28 is set a WHOLE LOT HIGHER than we have been taught. And that is adding to the command which is forbidden in scripture.

Also I read that there are lots of arguments about if its ok or not and nobody seems to really know.
Unfortunately, that was made the case as people tried to distort the original meaning. Our Lord was a first century jew. He spoke almost exclusively to first century Jews. There is a certain shared cultural understanding that has been lost in our modern western world.

Masturbation was not much of an issue when people regularly married in their early or mid teens.** But now, when the average age of marriage is in the mid to late 20s, it is a HUGE issue.

** in first century Judea, marriages were arranged by the parents when the couple were age 7-9. At about age 12 or 13 the families would sit down and negotiate a contract of marriage called a Ketuba. It was a legal contract and the couple would be "betrothed." That was was more married than just engaged. After that was signed, the boy would start to build a house under his father's supervision, which would take about a year. After that the couple would move in and consummate the marriage, and then have a party for about a week. So they were married (having sex) at age 13 or 14.

Our Lord said this:

Matthew 7:20
So then, you will know them by their fruits.

It speaks in that context of people, but the more general principle is that you can know if something is true by the fruit it bears. What kind of fruit has the "no masturbating" teaching produced?

Just look thru the pages of this very web site. Person after person has been beaten down, condemned and walk around with a load of guilt from masturbating. Others have left the faith. I have read of those who try to commit suicide because they are unable to stop.

And those who DO succeed in stopping frequently have serious issues with sex after they get married. Do a google search for "Purity Culture Fail" to see what I am saying.
WARNING: some of the results will use a lot of bad language.

That is NOT good fruit in my book.
