Canada's Maple Leaf flag dates from 1965. But the maple leaf has long been a symbol of Canada, and, indeed, of various New England states also.


It is therefore a thoroughly indigenous plant and symbol now representing Canada on its glad.


The vertical read and white stripes are derived from the flag of the Royal Military College, Kingston, Ontario.

The red on either side represent the oceans...as on our coat of arms: a mari usque ad mare (from sea to sea). :)
