  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

On the one side, rioters throwing rocks and burning down buildings. On the other side, armed police and the National Guard.

Why wouldn't you want to get right in the middle of all that?

Hey.. I stayed home.. just.. weird watching a big news event.. and feeling like I'm missing out.. lol.

And when the news shows you massive forest fires, tsunamis, hurricanes, and breached dams?

I'm really hoping you don't feel the urge to investigate those up close.

If I'm within short driving distance.. yeah IDK.. I'm tempted to see it in person.

After a riot in the San Diego ghetto after the Rodney King beating some of the destroyed stores did not reopen and for over 20 years. They had a very hard time enticing big chain stores to open in that area. Eventually, after offering large tax breaks and good deals on property a few opened.

Helps no one when burning down your own town.

Not arguing (agreeing) yet I'm not sure how much of this anymore is instigated or in part caused by hometown folk. Political forces have been caught too many times in recent history flat out destroying everything in sight for obvious reasons far different than any group 'mission' that they are 'supposedly' associated with.

Absolutely... without a doubt... they murdered this man. I know where the footage of him on the ground is but I cannot link it here. There is absolutely nothing any human being could have done before being in custody to deserve what I saw.

This needs to be a capital offense.

Man no doubt... I might have ended up in jail. It is that bad. Every fiber of my being wants to knock that cop off of him.
You ending up in jail after trying to knock that cop off seems to be the best case scenario. More likely you'd either be getting a knee to the neck until you choke or just a dozen bullets.

As a business owner, the looting and destruction is horrible. The businesses aren’t responsible for what occurred.

But as a fellow citizen, I’m aware this escalated to a point you’d never see in well-heeled communities. Our city routinely shuts off shopping districts for sporting event finals. They protect the businesses.

When Operation Wall Street tried to shut down a highway they were thwarted and redirected elsewhere. Similar protests have been heavily monitored with a visible police presence to stave off destruction.

I don’t have the data, but I would be curious to see how these areas fare a few years down the road. Do businesses rebuild or go elsewhere? I suspect the answer is a bit of both.

~Bella

No one but that one police officer is responsible. The rioters are just taking the opportunity to cause damage. Mob justice is no justice. It's a sad reflection of the level of civility a society holds.

The problem with a riot is that whatever noble cause they supposedly profess is lost in the depravity of the carnage they wrought on the innocent and by standers.

Looting and burning under the guise of justice. The rioters metaphorically use Floyd as a stepping stone. Parading his death as a banner to violence.

Precisely.

Anger at being stereotyped as criminals and then protesting said stereotypes by going out and being criminals (vandalism, theft, property damage etc) is the height of stupidity.

In case you forgot sir a life WAS lost. You are more concerned about protesters committing "attempted murder" while a cop sits comfortably in his home after ACTUALLY murdering a man.

You seem to forget that the officer will be investigated. He is getting his dues. Justice takes time.

These are all minor losses compared to a life.

Who's compensating for the damages. Unless you and the rioters are willing to fork out the cash you have no right to say its a minor loss. If it is so minor I would like to encourage you to help foot the repair bills and pay for the items looted by the rioters. As they say action speak louder than words.

A broken window and graffiti is something that can happen ANY TIME. I'm sure they understand, given the circumstances. I would.

A fight can break out anywhere, if you're accidentally get punched in the face as a by-stander I'm quite sure it's understandable. Robbery happens all the time, if your house got broken into and ransacked it's understandable. The people have good reasons to do these things to you. That's some logic isn't it?

Says the man pointing fingers at the WRONG CROWD.

You seem to forget 2 wrongs don't make a right. The death of Floyd is wrong. Looting and burning by rioters are also wrong. If a wrong can be right by another wrong the whole world will be burning! Can the shop owners now go to burn down the rioters house, car & property since injustice has been done to them?

You might not have realise it, but the rioters have done more harm to the cause of Floyd's justice. Who in a sane mind will get behind the cause of a band of thieving marauders?

Material things can be replaced but lives cannot. Furthermore people have set things on fire over sports so is this really all that outrageous?
Just remember though.....if major businesses there shut down shop and move out of the region don't be quick to call that outrageous.

I have a couple questions?

Where are the principles of scripture and Jesus' teaching in any of this discussion and the rioting?

Is this a Christian forum? I struggle to see any fruit of the spirit in it.

I fully understand there is a record of unjust acts against people of color in this country, but I really struggle to see how rioting solves any of it. I think society as a whole is simply going to feel stronger that the stereotypes fit. What part of the Holy book endorses destruction of innocent people's homes, businesses, cars and cause them to flee their homes. It's simply anarchy and a tool of the devil to destroy our moral base. When you look at the people who actually made a difference in civil rights, it was not rioters, but people who used some common sense in their approach. They worked to bring the problem to light, then worked to change the system by becoming community leaders, consulting government officials, people like Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks and many more. Would Martin Luther King advocate such activities as burning down and looting a Target Store, I doubt it. Peaceful and even loud protest are indeed a tool, even some civil disobedience, but criminal activity is not protesting it is simply criminal activity and the authorities should do whatever is needed to stop it.

To the black community, I hear you and I agree there is a problem. The video does in fact speak for it's self and I agree criminal charges are in order. When cops have to pay the same price as those they are arresting, they will take notice and change. No cop wants to be in prison for this, he will lead a very hard life there. However, I do not see how the violence helps the cause in any way or is appropriate forms of protest. Jesus was actually a protestor and I doubt he condones this kind of behavior. In fact scripture tells us that anger, hate, violence and crime is not of God. Watching the news, I made two observations I found significant, almost all the protestors were young people and most likely too young to own homes, have businesses, families and long careers. Number 2, I saw as many whites as blacks, so I can't blame the black community, as some are doing. I classify them all together as criminals. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of them actually don't give a D#m about Mr. Floyd. They just saw an excuse to be criminals and get away with it. I believe that a core group did care and wanted to peacefully make their point, but the criminals changed that. The good news is most Americans see past the idiots on both sides and understand.

There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death. —Proverbs 14:13

I raised a similar question last night but didn’t post. I have observed a pattern in responses during discussions of racial events on the site. Poor behavior is ignored or explained away with the ends justify the means rhetoric. While that is understandable for unbelievers. It’s the antitheses of Christian teachings.

But no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. —James 3:8-9

We aren’t gunslingers who settle our disputes with violence. We’re supposed to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. Not vigilantes or armchair caped crusaders. Justifying the actions of alleged perpetrators, victims, and protestors in deference to recent or historical wrongs is unacceptable.

We are expected to love our neighbors. All of them. Including wrongdoers. Irrespective of our personal feelings or convictions. Only God knows the truth. He didn’t cease to be God during the act or after its commencement. He saw it all.

All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the spirit. —Proverbs 16:2

For a group of people who profess to love and serve Him. He is eerily absent from the discussion. Where are the biblical reminders of justice and vindication? Why is it difficult to trust Him in racial matters. Why do we lean on our own understanding instead of His?

Martin Luther King called a riot "the language of the unheard".
