CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Now remember, we're talking about people IN prison who have lost their rights as citizens... and just because you get out doesn't mean you are a law abiding person who deserves the right to vote again, once lost... you have to prove that. Their choice in the first place, imo.

Alcee Lamar Hastings (born September 5, 1936) is the U.S. Representative for Florida's 23rd congressional district, serving since 1993. He is a member of the Democratic Party. He served as a Judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida from 1979 until his impeachment and removal from that post in 1989, and is one of only eight federal officials in American history to be impeached and removed from office.
They redistrict'd us this summer...so he's not my rep any more (awww shucks).

If you are released it is considered you paid your debt. Certain crimes, like treason for example, should exclude one from voting.
Drug crimes, simple assault, etc., are not really crimes that should bar you for life.
