I'm one of them-there professional liturgists, so it's something I get asked about all the time. I've not just wondered about it, I've done research. Sanitation & the eucharist has actually eaten up quite a bit of my time over the years.

Yes - when I have a cold I intinct, or just stick to the bread. When I have a cold, I also ask somebody else to celebrate, so that I'm not handling other people's bread w/ germy hands.
