  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Legitimate Political Discourse? Really?

You mean like almost all Americans? You have some real insight....
see now you are taking away all my illusions about people running for office because they want to serve and help people, or because they love this country. I feel real disappointed now, say it isnt true.

You are finally waking up? If this is the case, then may I direct your angst towards Donald J Trump, a man who is only out for himself. That is where you should focus your criticism.

Careful. People might start accusing you of being "woke." :D

While the alternate electors were not directly involved in the Capitol attack, the committee is correct to determine the root causes of the attack, which is just one part of an orchestrated plot to overturn the election.
Cheney and Kinzinger love their party enough to excise the growing cancer within.

The RNC censured Liz Cheney and Kinzinger for participating in a committee to investigate the January 6 insurrection.

Is this "discourse?"

2500 rioters assaulting Capitol police (injuring 138), vandalizing property, occupying the building?
There is no justification for the Capitol attack, and even less for the RNC coverup attempt.

The RNC has decided that the only way to cover up The Big Lie is to hide it behind an Even Bigger Lie.

Was making that statement best for his future in today's Republican Party?
I think there are many of the people that he is supposed to be representing who did not appreciate his statement. It along with other things will be considered when he runs again.

Well, I think it makes sense to distinguish legitimate investigation from "political theater".

The Jan 6th investigation efforts are largely the latter.

Is anyone with half a brain actually NOT understanding what happened or what caused it?

A bunch of people were angry that their guy didn't win, and resorted irrational actions as a response to misinformation claiming that the election was "stolen from them"

There's really not much to investigate here.

Let me save the taxpayers a lot of money and give people synapsis of what happened:
"Redneck doofuses got mad because their guy didn't win, so entertained conspiracy theories and acted as such"

The two republicans in question already know the same things we all do.

Their participation seems more like a "show everyone I'm one of the good ones" tactic.

I'm more concerned that so many people think it's warranted to spend millions of taxpayer dollars to investigate the painfully obvious.

"Joe Smith drank 8 beers and got in a car crash on the way home... we need to have a congressional committee to investigate why he ran his car into a telephone pole on the way home from the bar"

The committee has met (so far) behind closed doors; the real “political theater” will begin this spring when they hold open hearings .

Misinformation from the guy who didn't win... Now, did the guy or anyone in his orbit want those irrational actions to happen?

If so, they are criminally (or at the very least, morally) responsible for what happened.

"Joe Smith drank 8 beers and got in a car crash on the way home... we need to have a congressional committee to investigate why he ran his car into a telephone pole on the way home from the bar"

Suppose Joe Smith ran his car into a pedestrian instead of a telephone pole? The pedestrian's family wants some answers before they decide to sue the bartender who should have 86ed him 6 beers earlier.

For purposes of this thread, do those irrational actions constitute "legitimate political discourse"?

Obviously not...

But then again, I wouldn't consider this investigation attempt as "legitimate political discourse" either.

The investigation angle may be more "civil", as to where the Jan 6th rioters were both illegitimate and uncivil.

But none of it is "legitimate".

Investigations usually involve fact finding, and trying to answer a question.

I'd be willing to be most (if not all) of the people participating in said "investigation" already have their minds made up, and are just looking to bolster it by padding their stance.

We already pretty much know what their position is
"Jan 6th rioters committed an act of insurrection, and Donald Trump's rhetoric is responsible for it"

Do they really even need to go through the charade of pretending to "investigate it" when we already know what the conclusion will be?

Why don't they just skip the expensive parts and do whatever it is they planning on doing and save everyone a bunch of time and money?

We "know" that Donald Trump has done many things, but hordes of lawyers have made it impossible to get enough evidence to convince more than a half dozen Republicans (impeachment 2).
This committee is getting some cooperation--Pence's chief of staff, for example, emails, texts, etc.
The Supreme Court says his tax returns and other information must be released.
Some of it had been ripped up and pieced together.
What has been discovered so far shows an organized effort to overthrow our democracy. We need to prevent this in the future.
It is money well spent.
