Maybe I'm just attending very conservative congregations! Personally, I agree with women not assisting with communion or reading the gospel. Not an issue for me. But some of the others were. And yes, those were the ones that were man-made.

I assumed the not being a congregation chair was LCMS policy. I've yet to belong to one where there was a female chair.

And the bottom of my list was dependant upon the congregation and their constitution. I do know these things vary.
At our current church it is the men who do the communion prep and clean up. (I was on the Altar guild at our last church.)
At my previous church I was not allowed to serve as the chair of the Board of Ed, even though the committee wanted me to.
And they didn't want me to be the VBS director because Pastor was one of my teachers. (Pastor fought them on that one and we won!)

I'm just going with what I was taught and what my experiences have been. These have been congregations in Missouri, Virginia, Texas, North Dakota, and now with the ELCE.

You don't set up communion or take it down? At WELS church it's the altar guild that does that.
It's just our current congregation. I have been on an altar guild before.

Anyway, the core difference is that we believe that voting asserts authority over men.
Now that I would have a problem with, but to each their own.

And I like the LWML acronym. Funny. We have LWMS - Lutheran Women Make Sandwiches!

Great! Maybe our chair should have been WELS!! Sounds like he would have fit right in! :) And why don't the men ever cook???!!!!

It depends on what the role and responsibility of the church council is. If the council has oversight of any aspects of the pastoral ministry, then a woman cannot chair the council. The church constitution would need to be set up in such a way to spell out what the council/voter's assembly does and does not have authority over. There are reports from the Commission on Theology and Chruch Relations that address this issue. It may even be available online.

Hmmmm, I may have to do some reading and some research before we go back to the states. Not that I want to be the council chair, but I've known some women who would have done a wonderful job but were not allowed.

Because the women cook better? ;)

I think it's time management and multi-tasking. We can get the kids to take their showers, get church clothes laid out, bake a cake, prep a casserole, plan Sunday dinner, clean up Saturday's dinner, all without breaking a sweat or losing track of what we are doing!;)

I usually have some sort of textbook on the kitchen counter as well. No reason to waste studying time.

You are such a geek, you remind me a lot of myself. Except that I don't cook that much... ^_^

Dang, I came in thinking it was gonna be a cage fight.

:p

LOL, good one!:D Nah, sorry to disapoint, it's the reason we're all in this sub-forum. There's a tacit agreement to be civil. Now, if you paired the LCMS group with the ELCA group... you'd definitely see the fur fly!

Can I sell the tickets? I'll give RadMan and DaRev half the proceeds to split between themselves.

The fur flying would be us (LCC, LCMS) pulling our hair out, :doh:while the ELCA and ELCIC simply scratch their heads, and ask "What's all the fuss about".
