Sorry, he has committed bigger gaffes than mispronouncing words so he must be dumber.

Sorry, I don't think there can be a bigger gaff than mispronouncing a word that a child should be able to pronounce.

That shows such a deep level of stupidity that the person shouldn't be let anywhere near the levers of power.

I wonder what she will do now, will she admit error change her pronunciation and move on; or will she, like you and Mach, persist blindly in her error whilst brazenly stating she isn't even wrong?

Its been my observation that some people have a very hard time admitting error. I try not to push them too hard. I see it as more of a disablity than anything.

Then you are a better than me. I love showing the general public James' and Mach's inability to admit error even when it is obvious to all, and possibly even themselves, that they are wrong.

It is one of the funniest character defects I have ever seen, working Mach into a corner where he is arguing that black is in fact white is fantastic fun and, I would hope, a great spectator sport ( Just look at my reps those aren't for writing long interesting posts on geology over in the Physical and Biological Sciences section ). You've got to have a hobby, and mine is relatively harmless.

Just as when I say it's from Webster's I'm citing Webster's

I do not know where you learned to cite, but you are wrong. A citation needs to be specific.

The trouble of course being that we don't have a pronuciation symbolism for "nucular", but it was offered as ˈnyü-, ÷-kyə-lər

YOU offered it as ˈnyü-, ÷-kyə-lər because you do not know how to read pronunciation. All of this is because of your insistence, all because you really do not understand the subject matter.

I responded to it, not embraced it

When you adamantly defend something that is wrong, you are embracing it.

If I make a mistake this year, I'll own up to it, but so far, so good

In all honesty, this is the same case with all of your arguments. I have yet to see you make an argument that is based on real understanding of the subject matter. You can pretend otherwise, but your arguments are generally superficial, and absent any real factual or logical support.

Edit: If you disagree and are so certain of your position and arguments, why don't we have some sort of formal debate, one on one, evidence and all?

Good enough for me, once again Mach is right.

Main Entry: nu·cle·ar
(nü-klē-ər) and (nyü-, ÷-kyə-lər) is the correct pronunciation according to Webster's

mus·cu·lar
Pronunciation: (məs-kyə-lər)

Presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton had said "nucular", not just Bush.
How some people get offended and say it shows a lack of intelligence is just arrogant virulence.

Oh you poor people.

How about this. How do you pronounce cue?

Main Entry: 1cue Pronunciation: \ˈkyü\ Function: noun

Notice it is not the same sound as you see in nuclear or muscular. See the umlat over the u? Its different.

What you still fail to realize is that after all your argumetation, you've actually proved my point. Contentiousness aside, I appreciate the backup

Nor is it the same sound being discussed here.

Meantime, while Democrats are concerned about Palin's pronunciation, the Democratic controlled Congress appears impotent while the stock market is in a freefall

Yep Dems are making a big deal about pronounciation while you have people on the other sides saying they didn't know about people's backgrounds with whom they associated with for many years..persons that took money from Freddie/Fannie and derailed any reforms despite warnings from BUSH and Republican Congressman. People that tell crippled people to walk and don't know who the President was during the market crash of 29..and don't know when TV was actually used on a widespread basis. But the pronunciation of a single world is such a big deal.

Well, at least you are trying to get the thread back on track.

I'd just rather vote for someone who can pronounce a 7 letter word rather than a moron.

Luckily, in the UK, even rightwingers have a modicum of education ( usually Eton and Oxford ) and so they are usually as good at pronouncing simple words as normal people:thumbsup:

And here, pronouncing words correctly will get you labeled "elitist". Unless you are a conservative. Then its simply impossible to be elitist. You can even own 12 houses and not see the insides of a grocery store for decades and still be in touch with "joe six-pack".

Let's see, for those who still are defending this mispronouciation,

How about other similar words:

Learn

now an acceptable pronounciation would be "Lue -ran"

"Ah ned da LUE-ran dis tuf madth..."

Appear

now an acceptable pronounciation would be "a PUE -per"

"osifer, dis diket sez ah nedda a PUE per en court"

Hey, "Ossifer" is a good example too. That too has the moving of a consonant to make it sound more like some people say it.

A lot of people say "sub-pos-ub-ly" instead of "supposedly". How about that one?

Ah godda "F" on dis dern ingish des, sub-pos-ub-ly cuz ah cain't duda ingish.

What other examples of words that are commonly mispronounced would Mach now say are OK?
