  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"Ibrahim adds that the sadness expressed from people in Syria for a British MP is significant. He says: "It is quite surprising to see Syrians, from inside Syria, in a war-torn country, with limited access in a lot of its places to the outside world, tweeting and talking about a British MP who is half way across the world.

"This is especially because a lot of Syrians feel like they've been let down by the West and the international community for not taking enough action to stop the war in their country. So to see them mourning a western MP is quite a thing."

...."Jo Cox has not only had a clear point of view when it comes to Syria, she was listening, compassionate, and above all, she was fighting with us for the protection of civilians and justice in Syria."

..."She was one true advocate for the Syrian people. When Syrians think of a good British MP who we could always rely on, we think of Jo Cox."

There is a deep disconnect between many traditional working class Labour supporters and their actual MPs on BREXIT, the same disconnect exists in the other main establishment party - the Tories. Labour MPs have learnt that they are not electable if they take these peoples old style socialist positions on most things. But the anger and resentment of being ignored and marginalised is still a real force in British politics. The British political system has been very effective in recent years at eliminating even the language of discontent with the liberal direction it has chosen. But there are great many people who disagree with this direction who have no other way of expressing it than extremism. That does not make the murder of Jo Cox right of course. I disagreed with her politics, loved her Christian faith and supported her compassion towards immigrants. She was a mother and a wife and I think a friend to a great many also and a lot of people are crying about this. But there is a lesson here, the British people may be a lot more extreme in their views than many of its MPs are.

"...is believed to have had long-term links with a hard-right group

Mr. Mair’s ties to “right wing extremism”

Nazi regalia and far-right literature

Not blaming you for this in particular...I know you didn't invent the terminology.

...but society really needs to re-think how they're defining "left" and "right"

...or scrap it altogether and start discussing it in a multi-dimensional sense like the picture shown below

I think using simply "Left" & "Right" becomes a way for people to employ "guilty by association" logic against their political rivals (by associating two groups who really have no business being associated together), or attempt to insulate their own group from criticism by using the logic of "well, you can't criticize my group for that, look at all that the right wing extremists from your side have done!"

It's pretty clear this was a Brexit issue right?

I LOVE the "he's mentally ill" thing. A muslim extremist CANNOT be mentally ill. But a Britain first supporter MUST be if he's going to kill someone.

It's perverse that the so called ISIS/Hezbollah/Al-Queda (nevermind the hatred that exists between each of these groups) extremist wasn't dismissed as mentally ill with such speed and conviction.

Indeed, the perpetrator of the Orlando massacre declares it was done on behalf of ISIS, and mental illness is immediately ruled out. Whilst Thomas Mair declares in court "death to traitors, freedom for Britain" and immediately he is dismissed as mentally ill. On a side note, I do think that mental illness played a significant part in Thursday's tragedy, but the contrast between the two incidents is interesting.

Frankly, I think mental illness plays a role in every single murder that occurs.

What distresses me is how groups are SO willing to dismiss killings for certain reasons and get all riled up for others. To me, that attitude is nothing but attempts at self affirmation under the guise of "innocent until proven guilty".

In court, he said, "Death to traitors, freedom for Britain," when asked his name and other identifying information.

According to the prosecution’s summary, Mair said a variation of “Britain first”, “Keep Britain independent”, “Britain always comes first”, and “This is for Britain” as he launched the attack on Cox, who was killed on the way to her constituency surgery in Birstall on Thursday.

Murder suspect in Jo Cox case 'told police he was political activist'

Ben Abdallah didn't witness the entire attack and he went inside his cafe (meaning he might not have been able to hear anything besides something as loud as a gunshot anyway). On the other hand, 1 named witness says he heard the terrorist say "Britain First" or "Put Britain first" while yet another named witness heard him say, "Britain First":

Graeme Howard, 38, said,“He was shouting ‘Britain first’ when he was doing it and being arrested. He was pinned down by two police officers and she was taken away in an ambulance."

Only a clinical psychologist after examination can diagnose mental illness, but a man who can't give his own name - it does at least raise questions about his fitness to stand trial.

And the judge ordered an assessment, but would you be saying the same if he had declared he'd done it for ISIS? He took the first public opportunity to give his motivation.

Horrible. Prayers.

I'm confused though, and I'm not trying to be funny. I thought guns were illegal in the UK? Are there instances where people are allowed to have handguns there?
There is much about this story which does not add up . Contradictions everywhere .

lol and you find the need to tell me because....? I don't really care about people who disagree with stopping a genocide putting me on ignore.

How dare he mention one of the biggest issues she was concerned about possibly due to which she was assassinated by a terrorist.

I note how you quickly assume your own predjudices here in 'assuming ' .

By calling the opposition, who simply did not agree with her on staying in the European Union , Racists and Fascists ,she brought into the discussion a very negative energy .
She also wanted to go bombing again in Syria ,which would have meant troups and bloodshed ,and the UK ,once again interfering in an agressive manner, in the internal politics , of a foreign country .
People who are more aware ,know how badly this kind of thing has ended up ,so many times before .

Yes one would think a christian site would be less manipulated by those whose intentions are to do just that .
In France thee or four days ago a Moslem went to the home of two off duty police persons ,a man and a woman , and in front of their 3 year old son stabbed them both to death WITH KNIVES . Did you hear about it ? Is it on this website ? Why not I want to know if you are so diligent in gettign at the TRUTH ?

Can't we just call evil by its name. Rationalising it away as some kind of mental illness is a cop out.

Can't. Now THAT is a presumption. Chooses NOT to, that's more precise.
