  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

By a suspected right-wing terrorist/extremist.

“He was shouting ‘Britain first’ when he was doing it and being arrested. He was pinned down by two police officers and she was taken away in an ambulance.”

“He shot this lady and then shot her again,” he said. “He lent down. Someone was wrestling with him and he was wielding a knife and lunging at her. Three times she was shot. People were trying to help her."

I've never heard her name before today and I wish I had. She seems like she was a lovely woman who actually cared for the Syrians who are going through a genocide at the hands of Assad's regime and its allies. In an age where I feel like so many politicians don't go beyond lip service, she proved to be different and she will be missed.

Yep, she was a lovely woman who was a very strong supporter of helping bring in Syrian refugees and of the "Stay in" movement in the upcoming BREXIT vote/referendum. Likely a deranged nationalist anti-refugee/immigrant RWer here given his statements as he attacked.

This is terribly sad. She leaves behind a husband and two young children.

As well as being a brutal cold blooded murder, early indications are that it was a politically motivated act of terror. Passions are running high with the referendum next week, but that is healthy. To cross the line from passionate argument into horrible violence is an assault on democracy.

I'm confused though, and I'm not trying to be funny. I thought guns were illegal in the UK? Are there instances where people are allowed to have handguns there?
All handguns are illegal, but you can still own shotguns and rifles, with a licence. One witness described it as a sawn-off shotgun.

I can never understand why people can kill in this way, whatever motivates them, why would you want to do it to somebody?, even if you disagree politically, to actually just shoot and stab someone, unarmed, just having a normal day, to just murder them in the streets.

There is a line when all people should put politics aside and stand against murder and butchery of people, if the victim is left wing, right wing, Liberal, Conservative, man, woman, Atheist, Agnostic, Christian, Muslim, Jew, Hindu, LGBT, whatever they are does not matter, people should not kill people in this manner, for whatever reason they give, even if you disagree with people politically the murder of anybody should make us sick.

The more I learn about her, the sadder I become.

"While I am a huge fan of President Obama [...], on Syria I believe both President Obama and the Prime Minister made the biggest misjudgement of their time in office when they put Syria on the 'too-difficult' pile and instead of engaging fully, withdrew and put their faith in a policy of containment. This judgement made by both leaders for different reasons will, I believe, be judged harshly by history and has been nothing short of a foreign policy disaster."

(Also talks about sending air drops to besieged areas in Syria (nearly all besieged by Assad/allies), making the consequences for bombing civilians greater, imposing fresh sanctions on Russia if directly involved in airstrikes against Syrian civilians, collecting evidence for war crime charges against the Syrian regime, helping refugees find safety, and accepting unaccompanied refugee children.)

UK, you lost a person who sounds like an almost-too-good-to-be-true leader. I am sorry for your loss. I am sorry for the world's loss.

Oh my God. She was amazing.

On the other hand there are the ‘nothing can be done’ sect who see military action as an anathema in all circumstances, who view the role of Britain with suspicion and who trace back most if not all injustices in the world to UK imperialism. [...] This group deny they are against action per se (we want a ‘new diplomatic push’ goes the cry), they assert they are just against military action. Yet almost all of them have remained remarkably silent about Syria while hundreds of thousands have been killed, only now raising their voices to state what they are against rather than what they are for. It is best personified by the ‘Stop the War’ coalition, a coalition who don’t seem to know or care that there is already a war in Syria and has been for many years. If they were really the ‘Stop the War’ coalition they would have been actively campaigning for resolute international action to protect civilians and end the war in Syria for many years.

....I have long argued that Isis and Assad are not separate problems to be chosen between, but are action and reaction, cause and symptom, chicken and egg, impossible to untangle no matter how much we might like to. The brutality of Assad (who has killed seven times the number of civilians as Isis) has helped nurture Isis and been its main recruiting sergeant. As such they can only be addressed together, as part of a coherent strategy.

....The Prime Minister has compounded this for me by positioning the strategy as “Isis first”, like we are picking from a menu of independent variables. First we’ll deal with Isis and then we’ll come back to Assad. Wars don’t work like this. Indeed, by refusing to tackle Assad’s brutality we may actively alienate more of the Sunni population, driving them towards Isis.

With Regret, I Feel I Have No Other Option But to Abstain on Syria

Handguns and anything larger that's semi- or automatic are banned.

Rifles and shotguns can be licensed and even then it's pretty strict. Basically nothing too fast-firing or concealable.

You are allowed to own guns with a permit if you have a reason to own them, like when you are a hunter or sports shooter. Owning a semiautomatic pistol is banned since 1997, but of course, there are illegal handguns still around.

Could we perhaps not make this about gun control?

Right, because apart from anything else you can't really make gun laws in the UK much more restrictive than they already are!

Question seemed to be about how guns can be owned in the UK rather than the validity of the UK gun control legislation.

I think that the inroad to "see, even with strict gun control laws, bad things happen" is very obvious.

Just like disproving climate change with a snowball..

Well, I'm telling you that you are obviously wrong. I was, actually, quite clear that I wasn't trying to be 'funny' about my question. It was a serious question I wanted an answer to. Perhaps it's a language barrier for you here, and I mean that seriously, and not in a snide way. What is more, I guarantee you likely don't know how I view gun control. If you want to know so badly how I view guns and gun control, PM me, and then you can compare what you think you know about me with the reality on this topic.

No, I don't want to know. And this is no case of a language barrier, but rather a case of having seen such arguments go by that direction a thousand times on this forum.

Anyway, you got your answer, moving on...

Nithavela, can't really blame you for not wanting to go down that avenue either given how the other thread on the topic has gone. Turned into a total US gun nut member-waving competition out of nowhere.

Her poor children.

Her tweet from just yesterday included them:

I am sure her legacy will make them proud and will, along with their father, help lead them down the path of justice their mother took. Hopefully they will be able to retain their short precious memories of her as they grow older.
