I've had it with 2142

I bought Battlefield 2142 yesterday and I've had it

I spend four hours playing the game today and less than half of that was gameplay. Most of it was waiting for the game to transition between maps, to stop lagging, or to find a server that I wouldnt lose connection to or get kicked in the first few moments by Punkbuster for some unknown reason.

The game itself is cool. But mulitplayer is endlessly frustrating and you cant actually PLAY the game.

I've not had the problems you've described. One thing I've noticed recently is punkbuster is kicking for no reason in the first round after I log in...it's only started doing that recently and there's no problems with gameplay after that. I also know my husband had to change some of the graphics settings so that it ran well without lag on our PC...I've no idea what he changed though.

Speaking of Battlefield, I installed a demo of Battlefield 2 and I don't understand something.

All the reviews said it was a system hog and that you needed a pretty good system to run it well. My laptop is 4+ years old and I'm able to play in 800x600 resolution with most of the settings on medium except for the lighting, which is on low and the textures which are on high and it runs reasonably well. Sure it doesn't have all the flashy effects that it would on higher settings, but it doesn't look bad at all.

Single player is very smooth on BF2 and 2142. Its Multiplayer that gets laggy

Yeah I just noticed that, I tried the MP part of the demo, and it was lagging all over the place. It's a good connection too, and I have no problems with other online games.

Punkbuster was kicking me a lot until I manually updated PB. Do a search for PunkBuster updates installer or check some of the game forums. If your PB and game are up to date with patches and such then you should be fine.

I am running the same system I used for BF2 and no problems. Well... almost no problems. With Titan mode I get lag pretty sometimes and it is usually when the commanders have moved the Titans next to each other.

Hope that helps.

I've been having a lot of trouble with in-game stability.

The game lags frequently (My internet connection is fine and I've dropped the graphics settings) and its become rather more difficult to find a server that isnt clan-run. Clan servers tend to play favorites with members who are basically allowed to do whatever they want (Spawn-camping and other basic forms of un-fair play).

Plus the AA capability of most of the game is sad bordering on pathetic. AA turrets can lock on to a ship from a good range, but the rockets themselves have poor guidance systems and arent effective at very long ranges. Add to that its impossible to tell if a craft has activated it's point defense system unless they're close (generally close enough to see you and smear you). The cannon on the AA turret is fair useless, unless you're up close and personal you cant make enough shots hit to cause real dammage.

Vehicles are seriously skewed. Tanks are weak and have no secondary weapon (The zoom feature is next to useless because unless you yourself are perfectly still AND your target is perfectly still, your chances of hitting it on the first go are slim) like the autocannon in BF2. Walkers are impossible to aim unless you're standing still and with the rockets, you couldnt hit the ground if you didnt have gravity. The three-seater rover's gun is only dangerous if you stand in front of it and shake your ass at it Braveheart style.

Gunships are immune to small-arms fire. This wouldnt be a problem if there were really effective AA capabilities in the game. Shoulder-fired rockets are far too slow and dont do enough dammage for the one hit you may get. Granted Engineers have a special AA weapon, but it takes a while to unlock it and Im not sure how capable it is. As I said before, AA turrents are next to useless so if you're in a gunship your only other serious threat is annother gunship.

There are serious balancing issues that need to be adressed about the vehicles.

BF2142 is not BF2 and this is obvious in the vehicles.

But this also means we must learn to adapt.

The tank zoom is worthless the way I play. I usually try to concern my shots for weak spots on other armored. If it is infantry that I am worrried about I jump in the gun from the cannon if there is not a second person.

The AA on the ground can be tough especially if the air vehicle uses it's defence. But I found the Mech top gun to be pretty good at the air vehicles. Usually I go for the stunning blast first to stop the air vehicle and then I blast it until it explodes or starts to move again. Usually when it starts to move again I can stun it again. The ground AA can be used the same but I rarley get that chance since there is a building orm something in the way.

The APC has no heavy guns but in a situation with infantry it is a 'titan' and I have had 50:1 KDR with it.

Infantry is by the far most used for me. In BF2 I was a tank harlot and had great games with tanks. But in BF2142 I tend to be a ground pounder or jumping in and out of a quick little vehicle.

There many tactics I have learned in BF2142 and they are different than BF2.

Funny thing is that I started to play BF2 again and I suck. LOL

I am slowly recalling my tactics and kits that worked for me but I was definately still in a BF2142 mindset. :D

Does 2142 have voice built in? How does it work? Does anyone use it? Voice is big for me when playing online games.

Yes, just like BF2.

But the servers usually offers a teamspeak or something which can be better.

I understand that its a different game but there are basic issues with just playability.

AA is lacking in the game, tanks are under-powered and too thinly armored, and walker's anti-vehicle weapon is in need of a re-vamp.

That is cool Steezie. :)

BF2142 is not as popular as BF2. There are still more servers with BF2 then BF2142 (I think).
