What makes you think the Father doesn't understand the TONGUE THAT HE IS GIVING YOU??? Your own cite indicates that Paul DOES BOTH - prays with his understanding, and also with the spirit (which contextually = "tongues"). Rom 8:26 furthermore indicates that the SPIRIT HIMSELF prays with no human utterance even involved.

With either translation, it is words we are unable to speak, thus this text is not about speaking in tongues, nor praying ourselves in tongues.

9 But you are not ruled by your sinful selves. You are ruled by the Spirit, if that Spirit of God really lives in you. But whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Christ. 10 Your body will always be dead because of sin. But if Christ is in you, then the Spirit gives you life, because Christ made you right with God. 11 God raised Jesus from death. And if God’s Spirit lives in you, he will also give life to your bodies that die. Yes, God is the one who raised Christ from death, and he will raise you to life through his Spirit living in you.

12 So, my brothers and sisters, we must not be ruled by our sinful selves. We must not live the way our sinful selves want. 13 If you use your lives to do what your sinful selves want, you will die spiritually. But if you use the Spirit’s help to stop doing the wrong things you do with your body, you will have true life.

14 The true children of God are those who let God’s Spirit lead them. 15 The Spirit that we received is not a spirit that makes us slaves again and causes us to fear. The Spirit that we have makes us God’s chosen children. And with that Spirit we cry out, “ Abba, Father.” 16 And the Spirit himself speaks to our spirits and makes us sure that we are God’s children. 17 If we are God’s children, we will get the blessings God has for his people. We Will Have Glory in the Future
18 We have sufferings now, but these are nothing compared to the great glory that will be given to us. 19 Everything that God made is waiting with excitement for the time when he will show the world who his children are. The whole world wants very much for that to happen. 20 Everything God made was allowed to become like something that cannot fulfill its purpose. That was not its choice, but God made it happen with this hope in view: 21 That the creation would be made free from ruin—that everything God made would have the same freedom and glory that belong to God’s children.

22 We know that everything God made has been waiting until now in pain like a woman ready to give birth to a child. 23 Not only the world, but we also have been waiting with pain inside us. God’s Love in Christ Jesus

I really hate doing this back a forth thing especially on the subject of tongues. I understand this is a very important part of a Charismatic approach to prayer , but I must at least make a clarification on what I believe Paul is speaking of when he makes this statement.

What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.

This is the closest Greek translation using the Greek Interlinear Bible.

What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

I understand that when I pray, I should also understand what I am praying about at all times. I also believe that the Holy Spirit dwells in me and I am praying in His Spirit at all times while I have understanding.

As a reminder, I spoke in tongues upon conversion in the 80's. It was not many years later, taught to me or even pressured on me because I am a Pentecostal it simply came out.

And, of course, I NEVER SAID IT WAS about speaking in tongues, since it's clearly not.

I have seen it used by Ignorant Pentecostals as a "Proof text", along with Acts 8:18.

You are assuming that it is because the speakers were speaking those languages, and then expecting us to treat your assumption as Gospel. The second huge problem is that even if the tongues in Acts 2 were known languages, there is nothing in the scripture that declares that as the only way for tongues to operate, but Paul very explicitly says that tongues speak to God with no man understanding.

Big O's Razor: The simplest explanation was those filled with the Spirit were speaking the human languages represented by those listening. Since, paul says God is of order, it is likely each person filled, spoke in turn just like Paul instructed those giving prophecy are to do.

So, philosophy over scripture, got it.

Do you realize that none of what you said there is in the Bible?

That's nice and all, but why should I hold some man as superior to scripture?

What does Romans 8 have to do with it?

Someone's statement has to do with

Romans 8:26 King James Version (KJV)
26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

The HS uses words that we can not speak at all. In context, this verse has nothing to do with speaking in unknown languages, nor does it relate to a prayer language.

I believe all the gifts are for today, but I can not stand people reading things into a text that is not there.

No, the razor is based on common sense. Like it or not we all use our human minds when reading the Bible or any other book for that matter. Anyone, who thinks they do not use some kind of philosophy when reading the Bible has very poor Metacognition and cognitive skills.

"Metacognition literally means "big thinking." You are thinking about thinking. During this process you are examining your brain's processing. Teachers work to guide students to become more strategic thinkers by helping them understand the way they are processing information. Questioning, visualizing, and synthesizing information are all ways that readers can examine their thinking process.
