  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Is it possible to counter culture yourself right out of an audience? I think it is. I think this is what we're seeing with traditional southern baptist churches. The ones still thriving are the ones who've adapted to the culture . . . not the ones still singing three hymns.

I like the song of Moses myself

Reve 15:3 And they are singing the Song/wdhn <5603> of Moses, the bond-servant of the God and the Song of the Lambkin saying "great and marvelous the Works of Thee Lord! the God, the Almighty. Just and true the ways of Thee, the King of the saints" [*ages/*nations]. [Exodus 15]

Exodus 15:1 Then Mosheh is singing and sons of Yisra'el the song, this to YHWH and they are saying to say of I shall sing to YHWH that to exalt He exalts, horse and one riding of him He heaved into sea [Reve 15:3]

Adapted to the culture? Well with praise and worship unto the Lord why not clap. Why not dance. Why not shout? Shout to the Lord all the earth let us sing.. What I find interesting that men will go to a car race and shout and yell and scream for the driver they want to win.. Men will go to a game and stand and shout and yell and clap but when it comes to the Lord they barely open their mouths to sing.. Amazing really.. By men I mean humans.. Tee hee

if you make the Church look like the World, why would anybody be interested in it? They already have the World, people are hungry for something else

Again, I think this is a major misnomer in regards to being a relevant church or a 'hip' church. If you're being hip for the sake of being hip then you're missing the whole point. If you're adapting to the world's culture and putting the message in their terms, then you get the point.

no one talks about sin anymore, nothing is looked at as a sin, everything is just a choice, "violence is the only sin for the modern man" I forget who said it but they were right, and even then, there are sooooo many times we justify violence with dumbest and most selfish of things

oh contraire mon fraire'. Christians talk about sin all the time. Ever looked up and down the freeways at all the religious billboards? "Turn or Burn . . . God." Scriptures on divorce and homosexuality and God hates those who practice such things. That message seems to be well covered. And yet the church has not fared any better in those arenas than the world has. In fact, the world has called our bluff and has returned our judgment. They see through our hypocrisy. What we haven't shown as much is love. Why? Because it's easier to judge than it is to love.

trends come and go, if we try to look trendy we will only end up looking dumb, kids hate nothing more then the last trend lol it is always about what is new, by the time a "trend" would catch on in the Church it will already be passe
how do you stay on top of trends? be the trend setter

it's true that trends come and go . . . so do generations. best to stay in touch.

Well we are as Seen and taught by the Apostles that sin is to be confronted and dealt with. Truth is to be applied to where sin is taking ahold.. What does one believe love to be?

Again, and again, and again . . . simply because one chooses to be relevant does not mean that he dismisses sin as a topic. What's at stake is how to talk about sin so that it is understood by a generation of people far removed from the knowledge of the scriptures that we have. Here's a challenge for you. Try to talk to someone about sin without using that word 'sin.'

I still have my garment of sackcloth hanging in the closet :D

Cool. Could I borrow it? I could use it for an illustration. Better yet, how about you come down and model it for the congregation while I preach?

I used a prayer shawl once -- so a sackcloth would be a great follow up.

In my city a few years ago there was a liberal church with a strong outreach program for teens. They actually held 'raves' and were attracting big crowds of kids with Christian Punk ( of all things ) and it was all going pretty good til some kid OD'd on ecstasy at one of their events. A little "ironic public press" shut them down in a hurry.

Flirt with the world, get the worlds results.

So if we are preaching the Gospel to any man and trying to lead them to Christ what is it that would be relevant to you? Would it be just telling them God loves them?

That would be my central message. Would it include talking about sin? Perhaps. Perhaps not. The Spirit of God would direct me in that moment. My bigger challenge is preaching every week to a congregation. Most of which knows the Lord. I have people in the crowd ranging from high school dropouts to doctors and physicists. Making the message come alive for all of them and challenging all of them at their level . . . that's the real challenge. Teaching the 18 year old college student and the 75 year old retiree. Another challenge. Relevance is huge.

As far as dress I believe one should dress as not to draw attention to themselves.. In anywhere we go. For it is not about us. It is all for the Glory of God. If a preacher wants to dress funky though it is not what is on the outward of the man that God looks at but the heart and its intentions..

Considering Jesus wore a sheet I don't really think it matters what one wears. :)
