Were more than likely still going to sin some, but hopefully not as much over time, even after being baptized, but, the difference is, you penitent about it with God, and you get back up quickly and recover and re-dedicate yourself with renewed vigor and resolve and dedication and commitment to doing your best not to do it again...

Your penitent, means your attitude about it towards God, you quickly confess and ask forgiveness afterward, thank Jesus for providing for you to be able to slip up from time to time, and get back up and rededicate yourself to committing to not doing it anymore or again,

Rinse and repeat as necessary,

Try to learn from your mistakes,

God Bless!

As much guff as the Church catches for all its tradition and ceremony I have always found it ironic that many Protestors want to insist Baptism is just a symbolic ceremony. Especially given the importance of Baptism as emphasized by God Himself and in much of the NT while following ceremonial laws are de-emphasized as not being a requirement for all Christians or even not at all. I even recall wondering about that when I was a Southern Baptist. When asked I would get the standard, "well it was a command so we do it". It does make me want to smack my head.
Baptizing clears the way for something, remember "prepare ye the way of the Lord". The Spirit descending AFTER He was Baptized.
With all that is depicted going on at the Baptism of our Prime example for all believers, who of course even the Baptizer recognized did not need it, it baffles me that someone would think we are just going through the motions of a ceremony in doing it.

Will there be people in Heaven that were never Baptized? Of course.
Is it required for the new believer to be Baptized? Absolutely.
Why? Because the Grace bestowed in doing that (which comes from God not a ceremony) allows the Spirit to fully "descend" upon us and that can only be a very good thing for all believers. Which is why Baptism is commanded.
Can we have an indwelling without getting Baptized? Obviously, see Acts 10 -happened while Peter was preaching and then the believers receiving that Spirit were immediately given a water Baptism.
Can we get remission of our sins outside Baptism? Absolutely, that is why we are repeatedly told in Scripture to confess ours sins and ask for forgiveness. Because we all continue to sin, such remittance would be the only way to keep us from starting to drive the Holy Spirit away from us. And that is a bad thing.
Can we get to Heaven without having our sins remitted? Absolutely not. Sin is what puts our fate in question in the first place.

Hi sdowney717, Thanks for your words of encouragement, participation & contribution to the OP.

I have a few more thoughts I'd like to share with you and other readers.

The earthly ministry of Jesus, preached by Jesus & the 12. Was the """Gospel of the Kingdom""". And was preached to a collective audience, Gods chosen people, the Nation of Israel.

Their salvation was collectively based upon believing that Jesus was Israel’s promised Messiah, (Matt 16:16; Jn 11:27; Acts 8:37).

Its message was that God’s earthly kingdom that the prophets had proclaimed was at hand.

It required repentance, they were to repent from turning away from God and breaking covenant with Him (Jer 10:11

Water baptism was commonly used Jewish purification doctrine.

AGAIN THE MESSAGE JESUS PREACHED DURING HIS EARTHLY MINISTRY WAS THE:

"""GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM"""

JESUS EARTHLY MINISTRY WAS TO THE LOST HOUSE OF ISRAEL ONLY!

Galatians 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
(JESUS EARTHLY MISSION, WAS ALL LAW, ALL THE TIME)

Matt 10:5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, """Go not into the way of the Gentiles""", and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:
(JESUS SENDS THE ORIGINAL 12 TO ISRAELITES ONLY. """GO NOT TO GENTILES"""!)

6 """But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel""".
(DURING JESUS EARTHLY MINISTRY. JESUS AND THE 12, ARE SENT THE SHEEP OF THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL ONLY!)

Matt 15:24 Jesus said, I am not sent but unto the """lost sheep of the house of Israel"""
(JESUS SAY'S: GO ONLY TO THE SHEEP OF THE LOST HOUSE OF ISRAEL! NOT TO ANY GENTILES)

While alive the earthly ministry of Jesus is for the """lost sheep of the house of Israel.

"""JEWS ONLY""".

Romans 15: Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers:
(DURING HIS EARTHLY MISSION JESUS WAS A MINISTER OF THE CIRCUMCISION:
"""JEWS ONLY""")

Jewish leadership rejects their Messiah and has Him killed.

Matthew 27:51 Jesus dies, And behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; Old Levitical
(JESUS HAS FINISHED THE WORK OF REDEMPTION. FULFILED THE LAWS REQUIRMENT FOR SIN. OLD COVENANT ENDS RIGHT HERE!)

The RISEN Lord chooses Paul and sends him to the gentiles. Opening the door of salvation to gentiles.

Pay special attention the verse 17

Acts 26
16 Jesus says; rise for I have appeared unto thee (Paul) to make thee a "minister" & "witness" both of these things which thou hast seen, & of those things in the which I will show you

"17" Delivering thee from the Jews, & from the ""Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee""

Paul, is sent to the GENTILES by THE RISEN LORD!

Paul's message, the preaching of the cross was salvation (1 Cor 1.18, 15.1-4, 1 Tim 1.11

The Lord gave Paul a new gospel (Gal 1.11-12). Paul’s gospel (Rom 2.16, 16.25), was different from the gospel of Jesus & the 12.

Its focus was not upon the identity of Christ but upon the work of Christ.

Paul’s gospel was that Christ died for our sins & rose from the dead (1 Cor 15.1-4).

This gospel was not preached during Jesus’ earthly ministry or by the 12

Paul referred to this gospel as “my gospel” (Rom 2.16, 16.25; 2 Tim 2.8; Gal 2.2).

It was different from the gospel Jesus or the 12 preached. Luke’s account of the Council of Jerusalem made this clear Acts 15

Paul revealed that his gospel was a “secret” (Rom 16.25).

The Twelve had no understanding Jesus would die & rise from the dead (Luke 18.31-34; John 20.3-10

WHY WAS THE GOSPEL KEPT A SECRET?

1 Corinthians 2:7 Paul say's he speak's the wisdom of God in a mystery (secret), even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
(PAUL SAY'S: THAT BEFORE THE WORLD BEGAN. GOD ORDAINED THE SIN ATONING REDEMPTIVE PAYMENT OF CHRIST. AND KEPT IT A SECRET)

8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
(IF SATAN HAD KNOW GOD'S SIN ATONING REDEMPTIVE PLAN. CHRIST WOULD NEVER HAD BEEN CRUCIFIED)

COUNCIL AT JERUSALEM
At the Council in Jerusalem (Acts 15) All the apostles agreed & validated. Gentiles need not keep the Law given by Moses. And sent letters to the gentile Churches stating such.

After the Council, only Paul’s gospel of grace was valid. The Gospel of the Kingdom preached by the 12 was formally supplanted/SUPERCEEDED by Paul’s grace message.

Given to Paul by the Risen Heavenly Lord Jesus

Paul’s gospel is of faith alone: FAITH + NOTHING "Sola fide".

Paul’s grace gospel, is not a kingdom gospel.

Paul's gospel of salvation is believe that Christ died for our sins & rose again (1 Cor 15:1-4)

The Gospel of the Kingdom message.

Isn't applicable for the Church today. Maranatha

CHRIST knew there were other sheep and that there would be ONE FLOCK

Theres only one house and the two ( those near-the Jew who had the covenant promise of God) and (those far-the gentile who did not have the covenant promise of GOD) are being joined together in ONE...

The kingdom of THE SON applies today

GOD transfers us out if the kingdom of darkness and brings us into fellowship in the kingdom of LIGHT in HIS SON whom HE loves

However we read the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from all sin.
If earthly water did that then it would have been mentioned by Apostle John in his letters.

Charles Spurgeon noted once, that if the water itself saved we would be dousing prisoners daily. He said such as a tongue in cheek to get at the greater portion of his sermon.

Long but worth the time.

lol this was posted today and this much replies.

But yeah it is

Verly verly I say unto thee accept ye be born of water and spirit ye cannot enter the kingdom of God.

JESUS said this and he led by example being baptized in water and the bible says he also received the holy ghost to show us exactly what he meant.

Why do we repent sir?
Why does the revelation of JESUS CHRIST , the TRUTH of the GOSPEL prompt the response of repentence?
GOD does the sealing when we believe

Ephesians 1

I only know, that as for me, I "Need" baptism, used to think I didn't, and still know I really don't, but, I do need some kind of a significant "act" or action I can take, that would be something significant that I could remember as a kind of re-enforcement like a solid foundation and a sign and seal for me, to not go back to my old ways again...

It would help me immensely with that right now, but, I didn't always think that, I used to think I could do without it, but now, I just feel like a need it...

Right now, It would hold significant, special meaning for me, just like a way of re-enforcing what I already have, or, the progress I have made...

If it's not being pressed upon your conscience then don't do it, but, if it is, why not just do it? What is preventing you from doing so?

I take the position of no, and yes.

No, because "faith alone."

Yes, because if you claim to have saving faith and yet refuse or just "never get around" to being baptized then I start to have serious doubts about a persons salvation. I do recognize that if someone were to die before getting the opportunity to be baptized, and had previously expressed a desire to do so that God would not prevent that persons entry into heaven.

I'd consider it the first act of obedience and submission.
The thief on the cross was saved but obviously did not have time to get baptized.

But accepting Jesus as the Son of God, having died to pay for your sins, and your savior is only the first step.
Your next step is to be reborn in him by submitting to him and letting go of your past sins - the act of baptism is a symbol of rebirth, submitting to God for all to see, and the cleaning/washing away of all your sins past and future.

If you can't submit to that after the price Jesus's paid on the cross - then your too proud to really accept his gift and likely have little intention to follow in his path. Your viewed Jesus as a get "out of jail free" card - but salvation is a contract often compared to a marriage contract in the Bible. That implies your to live a certain Faithfull lifestyle. That means loyalty, personal sacrifice, fidelity, and constant love.

Ordinarily, yes.

However if someone is not aware that they need baptism, or is unable to obtain baptism, through no fault of their own and desires God and commits themselves to him, they can be saved.

I don't think it's necessary to be saved, you know the story of the robber on the cross that got saved without baptism. Even so it's a command from the Lord, and we shall do it, because he tells us to do it. If we fail to do what he commands, there is of course forgiveness. It's a blessing really, to be baptised in the trinity.

To be a Christian and not wanting to be baptised is like saying to a person: "I want to be part of your team, but I don't want to wear your emblem." Could work in the beginning right? But sooner or later you may be kicked out if you don't get that emblem.

There is no question regarding the Lord’s sovereignty in bestowing His Holy Spirit baptism according to His gracious will – which leads to regeneration and sanctification for the elect of God. What God does is always effective. No exceptions. But what human beings do or a church does (e.g., the sacramental ritual of water baptism) guarantees nothing because of so many factors which we cannot assess from our earth-bound position. We should not be presumptuous to assume to know what only God can know or do what only God can do.

Yet we are commanded to baptize and so we should do it, as the public Amen to our already existing faith. But the evidence of the scriptures (e.g., Romans 9) and the evidence of the past two millennia indicate that sacramental acts do not (and cannot) force God’s sovereign hand. They are actions that we do from our end of things to express our gratitude for what God has already accomplished and for what we hope for in the future; they may represent our vows to God but they are not promises from God, and thus they are not guarantees of what God will certainly do in the salvation process.

As Michael Houdmann puts so well: The clearest verse on God’s drawing to salvation is John 6:44, where Jesus declares that “no one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.” The Greek word translated “draw” is helkuowhich means “to drag” (literally or figuratively). Clearly, this drawing is a one-sided affair. God does the drawing to salvation; we who are drawn have a passive role in the process. There is no doubt that we respond to His drawing us, but the drawing itself is all on His part. Water baptism is part of our obedient response. Infant baptism is a bit more complex, with two clear parts, baptism and adult confirmation.

Like the thief on the cross next to Jesus, who died before he could be baptized.
