• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

So... I discovered that I have scrupulosity. Basically, religious OCD. No professional told me, I looked up the disorder and well, the symptoms, as well as what the disorder was, all of that felt familiar with me, like it was a part of me. I was struggling with a certain issue relating to me, so I decided to seek any solutions to my problem. Some guy on YouTube said in a video that whatever is scaring me, I should purposefully face what ever triggers my anxiety, so I did. The context of this problem was a certain character, so I just looked up pictures of the character, which didn't really work. I looked up more about this treatment, known as "Exposure-Response-Prevention" or something like that. As I read about how that treatment works, I learned that I would have to do what I didn't want to do— go back to that website that triggered me. So, I read that one article that kickstarted my anxiety trigger for the time being, and... I actually feel better now. Am I doing a good job? This is supposed to be the most effective form of scrupulosity therapy, so will this help me? Or will I get this anxiety attack again? If other scrupulosity treatments work, please tell me, and what treatments worked for you guys, if any of you ever dealt with scrupulosity?

If you suspect you have a disorder it's better to have a certified professional diagnose it especially if it involves your mental health. Self diagnosis and listening to a random Youtuber might cause you more harm than good. You'll get confirmation bias on the remedies you read online missing out on others more important determining criteria that the treatment is working. Confide in a trusted individual and work up the courage to seek professional help. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness.

May the Lord guide and bless you.

Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP) is a technique that can be helpful in certain cases, but it requires professional supervision, basically a therapist that would help you face what you fear step by step. So you should definitely not do this by yourself.

Therefore I agree with the other users that you should seek out a qualified specialist that could find you the best treatment based on your diagnosis.

What helped me was Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). It focuses on training your mind to get rid of harmful thinking patterns through different excercises for the mind. It is also much less stressful than ERP. But definitely talk to a therapist before self-diagnosing/self-treating!

Some things are better left as they are. If you go looking for things, the enemy might end up presenting a banquet table before you, filled with all sorts.
What do you mean by that?

If you are a Christian, its important to look up to Christ and he will take care of you. That's what I meant.

This is standard hypercondriac behaviour. Stop it at once and make arrangements to see a doctor.

Actually, I think it's possible to learn to work on your OCD on your own. That's what I did. I'm not sure it's the most effective or easiest course of action - I think a therapist can be very helpful - but I do think it's possible, if you're willing to put in the time to educate yourself and possibly make a lot of mistakes along the way. :) And yes, ERP is considered to be very effective at treating OCD. I haven't checked any of these resources out, but they could be helpful: Resources and FREE stuff. Also, if you're interested in peer support, there's a helpful FB support group called "Christianity and Anxiety Disorders": Christianity and Anxiety Disorders - Let's Talk
I can also recommend more resources if you need them!
