• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have been suffering from depression on and off for several years. What I have noticed lately is that it seems to come in cycles. I'll be fine for a few weeks or a month and then I have a really bad week or few weeks where im extremely depressed. Is this common in people with depression?

As far as I know this is very common indeed, food and drink, medications, seasons, weather, moon time, (air) pollution, menstrual cycle, clothing and even sperm can all influence how people feel. If you want to find out what triggers your depressive stages it would be well advised that you keep a journal/diary and write how you feel when - checking past unusual times/events to see if that brought the depression on. I've hear of people who immigrated to escape the dark and wet of their birthplace to a country with much sunny weather as then depression did not strike at all or of people who cut out all fatty food or milk products to escape their ailing realities. Finding the triggers can alleviate much suffering that's for sure.

Hope you find some of those hand grenades.

Is this depression around the same time as your menstrual cycle?

not really, I tend to get more emotional around that time. I think im going to go get some christian counseling soon. Ive never seen anyone about it before but im getting tired of being depressed so maybe it will help.

Well, it is obvious that something is triggering this depression. It could be chemical, it could be cognitive or a little bit of both! For me, I suffered from major depression during my teen years and in my early 20's, it decreased. About a year ago, I would become depressed every 3 weeks or so. I attribute that reason to somewhat nutritional and then a lot cognitive. I have been taking B vitamins for the past 4 months and I have been incredibly impressed with the results. I also have acknowledged that my past has a way of presenting daily issues and struggles for me, so I must work through them. Today, I have been depression free for almost 4 months and it is great.

Just continue to persist and try different methods of treatment. Trust me, you are bound to find the inner and outer peace and joy that you have been searching for.
