i don't answer the phone unless i recognize the caller's number; if i do recognize the caller i greet them by name when i pick up or call them back. i saw a news report a few years ago about how thieves call and record people's answer and try to get them to talk so that they can record their speaking and re-splice the words to use to impersonate them; calling banks and stores to try to get personal information to use in stealing their identity.

to answer a slightly different question, i asked God what message to put on my answering machine a number of years ago, and this is what i believe He gave me to use on my home phone:

God loves you, and wants to have a personal relationship with you! He's seen everything you've ever done, heard everything you've ever said, and knows every thought you've ever thought, and He still loves you just the same. you did not reach this number in error, because God wanted you to hear that! if you'd like to find out more about how much God loves you, and what a miraculous impact that knowing that can have on you're life, please leave your name and number at the tone. you have reached <my phone number>

it shakes people up so much that sometimes the only message i get is someone laughing, likely stunned by what they've heard. often people have to call back to leave a message for me, and i probably miss a lot of messages to be honest.

i get very few repeat telemarketing calls, but a few years ago i had this one number calling several times a day for a couple of weeks without leaving a message. i looked the number up and found it to be a telemarketer, but since i had a 'check' about blocking it, i endured all the blank messages. finally, a man left a message who said he was sorry he had been calling so much, but he was a telemarketer and hated his job, because he felt guilty about disturbing people; but he needed the money. he said that hearing my message had been a huge encouragement to him, and he thanked me and promised to not call anymore. i wish he had left me a number to call him, but when i called the number shown on my caller id, no one answered.

When my phone rings I just say "hm ugh" or "..............(sigh) hey" or "yes?"

Is there something more biblical I can be saying instead?

yes. Pick it up, say "JESUS LOVES YOU!" and then slam it down.

I like it. I may make this my outgoing voicemail greeting.
If you really want to sound spiritual, answer in the English of the King James Bible.

"Blessed day! Thou hast reached Znr. What wouldest thou? Mine ear listeneth."

Selah.

Times have changed. Years ago it was appropriate to identify yourself and quickly greet. But now it's true-- identifying yourself gives telemarketers and scammers your name.

I reported one who kept harassing, making claims -- the agency said that if you give certain information, that can be equivalent to permission to call.

In that case they said they had an appointment with the head of household preventing them from being accused of cold calling. If I had given out names or phone numbers, they would have had more grounds for calling again.

So back to your question, keep it short and sweet. Good morning, good afternoon.

I tend to not say the caller ID name, because that creeps me out. I don't like to know that people are seeing who's calling, even though I know it's true. It's like starting out saying "I have the unfair advantage over you." Which at times you might want to use.

And even though God-lingo sounds like it glorifies God, I think it puts people on the spot and throws their memory off why they wanted to call you. Let them get to the point, then bless them at the end.

i don't answer the phone unless i recognize the caller's number; if i do recognize the caller i greet them by name when i pick up or call them back. i saw a news report a few years ago about how thieves call and record people's answer and try to get them to talk so that they can record their speaking and re-splice the words to use to impersonate them; calling banks and stores to try to get personal information to use in stealing their identity.
