It was actually believed as early as 100 AD to be Mt Sinai by Jewish sages according to Wikipedia. Predating the Christian monastic period, so it wasn't the Orthodox who claimed it to be so.

Ultimately it doesn't matter so far as my faith is concerned, but I would sooner believe Holy tradition.

And they were all misinformed because the evidences don’t match like the mountain in Saudi Arabia.
