Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

How many times does it say to repent here?

There is the big "R" Repentance when we acknowledge our fallen nature and surrender to Jesus, receiving His Salvation.

Subsequently, there is little "r" repentance when we acknowledge that we broke faith with Him (in our actions or decisions) and seek to be realigned with Him. The Holy Spirit convicts us of the latter. As long as we keep responding to Him, we remain in good standing.

The longer we reject His loving conviction, the more we move toward having a "seared conscience."

They are going to commit sins after that as well, are you saying they should not repent for those or at those times or when those things happen...?

    God Bless!

I agree. Someone who has to sin, repent, sin, repent, sin, repent, as a lifestyle does not have the power of the Holy Spirit to stop sinning in the first place. There IS a Big Repentance as you say, and one who truly repents and truly wants to be scrubbed clean of all sin and its lusts, is the one to who Jesus gives His Spirit. It is the Spirit who makes us DEAD TO SIN, and not in the flesh, but in the Spirit.

    This scripture comes to mind.

Matthew 18:21 Then Peter came and said to Him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” 22 Jesus *said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.

No, I'm saying the Spirit will not let them commit willful sins in the first place.

    "R"epentance is a one-time act; "r"epentance is a way of Life.

It says how many times does it say to FORGIVE someone else, not SIN!

It should be a way of life.

However Jesus uses the term repentance in the literal sense of turning around, and most of the NT does as well. Jesus tends to use it for people who turn their lives around, turning from sin to follow him. It's also used in the context "repent and believe the Gospel," meaning turning from someone who rejects Jesus to someone who follows him.

We should humbly realize our own sinfulness and ask God to help us. I think that's what people mean by having repentance as a continuing way of life. In this life we'll never be get beyond the need to do this. It's reasonable to call this repentance. But as far as I can see the NT doesn't actually use the word that way. It uses it for a major change in direction in our lives.

You have completely stopped sinning period and never make any mistakes at all, ever now...?

If were not in a constant state of surrender, then we need to repent constantly and consistently or on regular basis, and/or have it as a "way of life"...

It is our protection and will keep us humble, and from not sinning even when and if we don't even know or cannot see that we are sinning...

    God Bless!

    Fall, confess, repent, repeat...

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

    Way of life.

There are people who believe the apostles when they say we are dead to sin, and not in the flesh, but in the Spirit. And other apostles who say a Christian cannot sin because of the seed of the Father in them.

And there are others who argue with the apostles, and call them liars.

There are still sins that we don't recognize until after the fact, or those that we don't yet have a good handle on (after we get Saved).

I think to truly follow him, repentance has to be a way of life, surrender daily and often...

Not just realizing but also acknowledging, admitting, and surrendering ourselves (then asking for forgiveness daily (at least)...

    I agree...

Yes, there is the big one time turn around event in life for many people, but they will still sin after that, and will need to repent during those times and or daily, and/or making it a way of life, after that as well...

You will get puffed up with pride if you do not, and that much is pretty much nearly a certainty...

    God Bless!
