No, what I have done is to state what I believe. Or rather what I do not believe.
If you truly want to persuade others that your position is the correct one, you'd do better to do it from scripture, rather than "my church teaches".
Most churches do teach eternal torment, actually
So the point is kind of lost on people who are rethinking these ancient ideas.

Depends on who he's targeting if he's targeting anyone.
I would agree that if I were trying to persuade an evangelical, Church teaching doesn't do much. But then, neither does Scripture as they have their own interpretation not of the Church.

I have never learned so much orthodoxy purging heresy in such a short time....had to purchase more note pads especially due to MC sagacious truths, going to bill him for the pads...nothing personal...others also have contributed.

If you're going to debate in an open forum, you have to accept that there will be people there from all sorts of different denominations.
One denomination that doesn't need to be persuaded that this is heresy is the Catholics...so why "target" them?
Your point that others have a different interpretation than the church's is well taken...however, you'd do better to present your position from scripture than from "my church teaches".
I was raised Episcopalian...a very good Catholic friend calls it "Catholic Lite"...but I am one who is rethinking the whole "eternal damnation" thing. It just doesn't feel like God, to me.
You don't want to know where I think the idea originally came from...but I very honestly do not think God thought it up....

Well then, we differ. I hold Sacred Tradition as both Scripture and the teaching of the Church. Not one over the other as both blend perfectly. it's my belief and way. So why would i attempt to show myself to be an evangelical when I am not? I use both Scripture and Church doctrine.
But then, I'm a Creed believer. It seems some subscribe to a different creed

Isn't the response to God's love to love Him?
Isn't that a "feeling"?
My heart is very much involved in my faith.
I freely admit that.

Love is not merely a feeling. God is love and He is so much more than a feeling. Feelings can lead you in the wrong direction. Not all things spiritual are good things.

I'm aware the Apostles creed doesn't speak of this. The Nicene Creed does. It's called the Resurrection of the dead.
The Church teaches that all mankind shall rise from the dead at the Final Judgment. Not just those of the elect.(Acts 24:15....there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust..)
So just when does this offing of the soul supposedly happen? Seeing you are a scripture only type, could you provide some in answering that? Or is it simply your tradition?

Rev 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.
Rev 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
Rev 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
Rev 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Now, if hell were the lake of fire, how could it be thrown into the lake of fire?
And we know what happens to death..."death is no more"

Add to this the number of times God says things like "the soul that sins shall die" or "the wages of sin is death"....

After awhile a pattern emerges....

The Lake of Fire

This is talked about somewhat frequently in here when talking about hell. We know that it says in the Scriptures that the lake of fire is prepared for the devil and his demons. But does it say that all those who reject Christ are going to be thrown into the lake of fire?

If one believes that heaven and hell are more of a state of being - being in the presence of God - Light and Love - that feels joyful and peaceful and comforting for those who love Him and agonizing and like burning fire for those who hate Him - then what does one think of the lake of fire.

Those who believe hell is a physical place (although it says God is everywhere in and in everything, so I'm not sure where this hell would be), is it different from the lake of fire, and do you believe everyone who has rejected Christ is tossed in there?

All we know is that whoever's name isn't in the Book gets tossed in there.
Now, that's one book you won't find in the library.
We don't know whose name, other than our own, might be there or might not.

I do know, however, that God sees our hearts...
He seems to be very concerned with what goes on in there.

And you assume that Annihilationism is a heresy, yet Irenaeus wrote that those who reject God will deprive himself of [the privilege of] continuance for ever and ever. Irenaeus is saying that those who reject God will NOT continue to exist forever in hell being tormented alive.

I do find humor in the topic as being forever tormented inwardly and outwardly at different levels of hell, one of the few topics I'm 100% sure of.

What's not so humorous is I view annilhilationism as not only falsifying the Word, but one of the gravest kind as allows Christians to have no fear of our Lord continually offending and provoking our Lord for the rest of the week after the one hour on Sunday.

When our Lord views this sinful condition perverting the essentials of the faith collectively then calamities strike where even Christians that do have a heartful fear of our Lord suffer also. I can assure you the older one gets the less one loves pain.

Old Jack's opinion just thinking out loud again...now I have to google up what 'heresy' means? :D

2 Tim 4:6 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my... departure....is at hand.

359 // analusiv // analusis // an-al'-oo-sis //
from 360 ; TDNT - 4:337,543; n f
AV - departure 1; 1
1) an unloosing (as of things woven)
2) a dissolving (into separate parts)
3) departure
3a) a metaphor drawn from loosing from moorings preparatory to
setting sail

This is CERTAINLY destruction and perishing at the hands of a natural process called...CORRUPTION:
Gen 3:19....dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

No resurrection mentioned here, but if some of the dead pass the judgment, will they be resurrected and not the ones that do not pass the test remain in the ground?

2 Tim 4:1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge....the quick and the dead .....at his appearing and his kingdom;

:D

That leaves NO CAUSE to pervert the word of God just because we think it oughta be that way. Let that standing be between the Redeemer and the redeemed.

But where is your pay raise :D

Had a few paygrade decreases...our Lord even sent me to back of the line regarding gifts of the Spirit?

After I fully heartfully realized forever tormented in the lake of fire is a reality then I was in line for still an awaiting paygrade increase.
