I am a pentecostal christian, and in the two churches I've congregated myself in (one of which I am still residing in, and hope to continue to stay for a long, long time) cutting your hair in sometimes forbidden. In my first church, which was very much dictated by man, instead of God, they said it was a sin to cut your hair in the slightest way. Even so, members always seem to go regardless!

In the one I'm in now, they say it's fine to trim and such, but not to chop off your hair or do anything drastic. I've been wanting to get bangs for two years- the pastor's wife once told me she doesnt approve of people doing so, but understands that some people have complexes about how they look, because some people in our church do have bangs.

I dont want to defy my pastor, but the Bible does not prohibit it. I also dont want to present myself in a way that doesnt please the Lord. What should I do?

It is ok to trim your hair, cutting it entirely/shaving it off though is against scripture. It would be wrong too to cut it too short (short like a mans' head).

When a woman is praying, they ought too to have their head covered.

1 Corinthians 11:5-6
And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is just as though her head were shaved. If a woman does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head.

With regards to bangs (I had to look up what you meant by bangs - I seen a picture but don't know what it entails.)

I'll just quote this.

1 Peter 3:3-5
Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful. They were submissive to their own husbands,

Sinse we are on the topic, dying of hair isn't something that should be done either.

Find a church that is teaching the Word of God, and not all this nonsense of haircutting and movies.

When any art form becomes out of bounds for a Christian we have retreated into a religious bubble, a purely private thing, that thas no relevance to society outside of church walls. Throughout the centuries Christians, many who were also great artists in various forms , have created wonderful paintings, sculptures, movies, drama, novels, etc.

Find a church that is not into some pagan based denial of the real world. Same with hair cutting. If your church has trouble with that challenge them to dress like people in the NT did as well. That would include working nude or semi nude an many more physical jobs.

If you feel ok with all the other things I'm sure your church wants you to do in the name of Jesus, but only want to cut your hair because your trying to acheaive a certain look, and only the parts of your church's theology you have problems with are the parts that conflict with what you want to do with your life.. Then I'd say your in the right place, and that you shouldn't cut your hair or goto movies...

But when you are ready to know God freely, He will be there waiting.

wow, the replies in both my forum posts are somewhat conflicting- some people here are saying it's okay to go the movies, other say no. Same with the hair thing. Even so, it's ultimately my decision right? As far as my hair is concerned, I want to look feminine, thats not an issue. Even so, my desire to stylize my hair is what I really have to question, and there's alot of though that needs to be made behind my decision. Even so, I still want to read more opinions- please continue, everyone, because I really appreciate your input and replies!

well, I dont want to give you the wrong idea of my church. The rules in my church are generally very much rooted from the Bible, and they are a much more understanding than the church I went to previously. Even so, it's of this issue, amoungst one or two others, that I dont agree with. In other words, I dont want to paint a bad picture of them, it's just a difference of opinion, I'd suppose.

I think its okay to cut your hair. I mean God is going to love you no matter what.
To be honest i think this is the first time i have ever heard that cutting your hair is a sin. To me it makes no sense why it is a sin. I mean I understand that if you do something to harm your body then its a sin, but cutting your hair doesnt harm you at all.

If you cut your hair God will love you anyway. I believe the hair thing is found in the Old Testament. We are living in the New Testement.

Honestly, where do you people come up with this stuff?

I am anxiously awaiting your follow up threads "Is it a sin to bathe?" and "Does Jesus really want me to brush my teeth?"
even though your reply did kind of make me chuckle, issues such as wearing pants, or putting on jewlery or makeup and even cutting your hair are all issues regarding doctrine, amoungst other things. There issues people face as christians because it's a question as to how we should present ourselves as followers of Christ, I'd suppose.

No, it's not wrong to cut your hair. In fact, it's necesary. You want healthy hair right? It's good to get it cut. It's healthy. I don't even think it's wrong to shave your head, as long as you do it so that your hair can grow back healthier. There are times when your hair is so damaged that getting it cut really short or even shaving it is the only option. At my church the wife of our former youth leader, her hair was really short. She kept it short, and I've always known her with short hair. Do you really think that G-d only honors the prayers of the women who's hair is down past their butt while wearing no make up and long skirts? Do you think G-d is that shallow? Remember, man looks at the outward appearance but G-d looks at the heart. Your heart is what matters. Not the outward. Sorry to be so preachy. I'm just very passionate about this. You said it correctly early on. It's the doctrine of men. Not G-d.

To cut one's hair or not to... is not salvation. Salvation is by the Spirit of God in one's heart.

If people claim otherwise, they are liars.

Better put, and more succinct.
