  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

fairy tales and stroys like harry potter contains magic and whichcraft...something like that...even the three little pigs story is a little magical(animals can't talk like those pigs!)
my question is whats wrong wif them? some christians say that those encourage whitchcraft but i dun think so...in fact, all the baddies got punished in those kind of stories and the good guy won...they din tell the people to start using magics for whatever penifit...in fact, they teach us valuble lessons!

Hiya! I haven't read or watched Harry Potter but what I've heard some christians don't like it coz you got the goodies and the baddies but the goodies are still using witchcraft which is wrong.

Some christians don't like the Lord of the Rings either but I love it! - I guess you hav to make to make your own mind up.

I've never heard anyone say fairy tales are dangerous tho!

There is a difference between fantasy stories using types of "magic" not found in real life, and those that do use types of "magic" that one does find in real life . .

There are such things a witches . .I was going to be one before I had my conversion experience . . though Harry Potter is fanciful, it is too close to our reality for my likes . . and there was reported in England last year by the witches, that they were seeing a surge in people wanting to become witches because of the Harry Potter books . . I have always seen them as dangerous to young minds . .

But fantasy, fairytales, that we grew up with do not portray magic in the same way . . there really is a difference . .

You have to decide for yourself about such things. They only become dangerous if taken too seriously or obsessively. I grew up with Cinderella and never heard anything about it doing anyone harm. If anything, it insrtucts one in a fanciful way to not do evil or that evil will not prosper a person.

LOTR? that's funny. The guy who wrote it was a very strong catholic and was like best firends with C.S. Lewis. Some say Tolkien wrote the LOTR trilogy as an Allegory of the Gospel.

But what is the difference? Both Cinderella's fairy godmother and Harry Potter use a wand but yet one of them is more Wiccan then the godmother? Hmmm... doesn't make sense.

Also, Harry Potter pokes fun at witchcraft. I don't believe Wiccans wear black pointed hats, ride on Broomsticks, play Quidditch, listen to a wizarding network, go to a magical school where they learn how to transfigure pins into pigs, have a Ministry of Magic ect. I can just go on and on but I don't want to bore you. ;) Plus does anyone look at the good side of HP? That good conquers evil. That no matter who you are you can defeat anything. And love is the greatest magic. Why didn't Harry die when Lord Voldemort, the most powerful wizard, tried to kill him? Because his mother died for him, and Voldemort's evil spell couldn't defeat love. Didn't Christ die for us?

A good editorial to read - http://www.luchau.org/writing/harrypotter.htm

Sometimes straining knats and swallowing camels goes on even with Christians.....er especially with Christians, but we learn and grow in grace day by day what is truly important for the soul and what is dangerous. Love of money and materialism seems fit to be a much more dangerous thing yet we all see fit to live in the middle of it. I say it all has to be seen with perspective of importance - fictional fairy tales or truth.

It's funny when we christians call magic bad and I understand why b/c the bible makes it clear to stay away from those things. But my thing is that stories like cinderella and harry potter are fiction and they only work in post-production and tricks with the camera. I love the story of cinderella and harry potter, I look at the meaning of the stories and I love that part. I know it's fiction, I can't say stanzas that will get the lights to turn off by itself nor am I going to encounter my fairy god mother. It's just cute stories.

I also love LOTR, that is why I want to be a computer animator and work with CGI, I love finding nemo, they are only stories, they won't change your life people.
