Is baptism necessary to be saved?

Sorry I couldnt possibly read all the posts in this thread so like usual I am jumping right in.

I've often felt torn on this subject since in my church we do child's baptism, usually like around a couple of months old. I was baptized this way. Then when you do your first Holy Communion you confirm what your baptism meant. But I have often wondered if I should get an adult baptism. However I do not believe that baptism is a requirement of salvation, but I believe that once you have accepted Christ, you should get baptized, like as proof. The biggest proof of course is the change in your heart and in your actions.

Just my two cents.

There is alot being said today about baptism and salvation. Many say faith only saves. Some say accept Christ in your heart as your personal and say the sinners prayer and you are saved. And later you are baptized to fulfil all righteousness. Some sayyou accept Christ in your heart and then you are baptized by the Holy Spirit and you are saved. Some say One must believe and repent of ones sins and confess Christ with your mouth and be baptized for the remission of sins and then you are saved. There are many more things people say and believe. I think we must go back to the fundamential question as to what true saving faith is. If we can see from the word what God sees as true faith, faith that He counts as righteousness than we can conform to what He sees as true faith and follow His will and not mans will.
Or mans teachings and doctrine. So my question is what is true faith the faith God counts as righteousness? I would submit to you that it is faithfulness. Faithfulness is volantary submission to what God asks. And it is wanted by God from those who follow Him and from those who wish to become a follower of Him.

The tree of knowledge of god and evil. Man had a choice to volantarily submit to God when tempted by Satan or to volantarily submit to Satan. If They (Man and woman) had not eaten they would have in faith submited volantarily to what God had said which was faithfulness to God. But they chose to volantarily submit to what Satan said. I will write more later. By for now God bless and keep searching the scriptures to see if these things are so.

Hi Periann Don't worry about jumping in; I'm glad that you've joined our discussion.

I never questioned the subject growing up because I was baptized as an infant, too. I don't remember anything that happened then or I'd tell you about it

But I have often wondered if I should get an adult baptism.

I started to wonder the same thing once I got to college. I began to read the Bible more and some things didn't square up with what I'd been taught or with what I'd done.

However I do not believe that baptism is a requirement of salvation, but I believe that once you have accepted Christ, you should get baptized, like as proof.

I didn't think so either. I had never really studied the question before though. Don't get me wrong, I looked through the Bible and found passages that I thought supported what I believed and was happy with those. I realized though that we have to consider the SUM of what the Scriptures teach, not just the passages that we like.

I believe that when we read and consider the entirety of the New Testament, it becomes clear that baptism for the remission of our sins is necessary for us to be saved, and that infant baptism wasn't acceptable. If you're interested in talking about this, I'd be more than happy to discuss it with you, since I've been in practially the same situation.

The biggest proof of course is the change in your heart and in your actions.

I agree The problem is that the Bible doesn't say this is all that's necessary. Your must believe and repent before you can be baptized, but that doesn't exclude baptism from the picture.

aggie03, what i meant by faith, is the faith that Jeses Christ will save us. That He will be there for us. I believe that if you truely have faith in Christ, that everything else will grow from that faith.

You see, we all have to learn not to follow our own minds, our own thoughts, but that of the Holy Spirit. We need to learn to be able to 'listen' to that Spirit, so we can learn from it and be able to follow the path that God wants us to follow. If we only listen to our own mind, we still be living that old sinnning way of life. If we follow the Holy Spirit, we will move out of that and learn. Jesus made it possible for us to follow that Spirit and move out of that sinful way of life, when he died and was reserrected.

- I know that i am not ready to be baptized yet, because i have not learnt enough yet. -

I feel that i havn't learnt enough yet to recieve the Spirit. I want to, but i don't think its right yet. I want to be able to understand completley what has been given to me when i recieve it.
I know of more people who have believed in Christ for years, but havn't recieved the Holy Spirit cos they weren't ready for it. They didn't know enough yet.

This is just what i think on the matter, and i feel 'right' by believing this. I trust that God will put me on the right path

It is not necesarry for water baptism to be saved.

But some where in your Christian walk it should be necesarry to the walk of obedience and a follower of Christ, just like we should give tithes, go to church, read the bible,help the poor and broken hearted, Witness and teach other and etc.

So obedience is arrived at according to when the believer decides to be obedient?

First of all the HOLY Spirit will show you the way, when to do things and how.

It is not about the believer telling God want to do but it is the freechoice to do what the bible say`s sometimes sooner and someetime latter , but when you are saved for real born again by the spirit of God you will know you are saved and the salvation message really works instantly like when you ask for forgiveness and when the blood wahes it away instatly you are forgive on the spot no attachments, and rituals added.

Hi AggieO3! Texas A&M by any chance?

You seem to believe that adult baptism is a requirement of salvation. Does that mean if I were to die now I wouldnt go to heaven because I hadn't been baptized as an adult? Even though I do follow everything else the Bible says?

Im interested in knowing what you think.

I have explain them time and again but if you want I will again going threw your verse again with verses not my opinion...

This is probably one source of the problems we've been having. It's now about throwing out verses that you think contradict what I believe, or vice versa. It's about finding out what the SUM of God's word teaches. We have to harmonize the verses within the Scriptures, not do battle with them.

I'm always willing to discuss things with you, and learn with you, until we both can come to a better understanding of what the Scriptures teach, no matter whether my initial beliefs were right or wrong. We must be willing to conform to what the Scriptures teach, no matter how much we have to change.

What is your definition of salvation - not what you think is necessary for salvation, just what you think salvation means. Let me know and we'll start working from there

I think it's going to be very important for both of us to be patient with one another. You're a calvinist (or at least seem to be ) and I'm not, so we're starting with completely different bases. We're going to have to work from the ground up and it's going to take a lot of time and prayer . I'm willing to do it if you are .

That's not what I meant, but thanks for the verses If you would like, now that you've posted the basis for why you believe what you do, I just want you to give me what you think salvation is or means. If you think there is a difference between eternal salvation and being saved, I'd like to hear that too.

I understand that your beliefs are based on the Scriptures, so I'm not trying to catch you in word play apart from the word of God, I just want to know what you think salvation actually is

Salvation is when the H.S. comes to one that believes God did it all...

what is he saved from Hell in the Future but better yet one get to be in the presence of the Lord....

one is saved in spirit right now and the flesh and soul during the rapture

is that what you are asking???
