There hasn't been a draft for a long time, but that is not the same thing as saying they expect to actually serve in combat.
I'm sure plenty of them never expected to serve in combat.
And I'm sure the people who signed up for combat arms are happy to serve in combat. But there are plenty of people who serve in supports arms that ended up being deployed without expecting it.
They can. However many people forget that when they join thinking they would be safe pushing paper somewhere as a clerk. A lot of people don't join the military out of a sense of patriotism anymore. They do it for the paycheck and healthcare, or the GI bill.I always thought that any soldier could be sent to the front line?
