I am curious what would qualify for "inappropriate" language in others homes.. my 11 yr old says things like : [wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth] heck dang shoot.. the "slang" for curse words.. i say its inappropriate because she knows what they mean and that they are cover ups for the real words, but my husband says to let it slide because shes not actually saying the words, i dont know which direction to go with it.. she will also say things like "yeah i heard you the first "dang" time.. to me these arent things that you "let slide" Any other input would be helpful.

CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have an 11 year old and a 13 year old. We do not have any banned words or phrases in our home. But I have always made perfectly clear that if they speak like a low-life who has no manners, and no education they will be treated as such.

I think you've discovered one of the paradoxes of cursing. Why certain words or phrases are considered profanity while others used in the same exact context are not, nobody seems to really be able to explain lol.
But the fact of the matter is that the majority of society does see "hell" and "damn" used as expletives as well as other various words as profanity while other words like "darn", "dang", "shoot", "heck" as perfectly acceptable. What if your daughter starts saying "awww rats!" instead of dang? Same context, again, totally different word. Or "rotten"? How about "poop"? I heard one trend where "holy buckets" was used.
Personally, I would be more concerned about her using words that society sees as profanity, because those are the ones that matter. Not trying to advocate conforming to society (as thats usually a BAD thing for Christians to do), but I am just pointing out that it is society that determines what words constitute profanity and what words do not. Most profane words did not even start off that way. Example, the B word is a female dog. Look what it means now. But as far as I can see, "darn" is more of an emotional adjective. Something disappoints you, you say darn to express disappointment.

^agreed. It wouldn't be the word that bothered me, but the context that she uses it in. What words would be ok with you? Why would they be ok when they are, like the words she's using now, covering up harsher profanity?
