We are on this earth for other people, not just ourselves. That might sound trite but I believe it to be true.
I'm not sure how far you will get with this, as, people who are suicidal are in so much pain they don't want to live anymore, so, expecting them to care about other peoples feelings isn't exactly reasonable. The expectations and feelings of others are often a burden, which is something the person you are dealing with might wish to escape.
It is unreasonable to expect empathy from someone made irrational by pain. To appeal to suicidal people you have to empathize with them, try to understand how much pain they truly are in and help them understand that it can get better and that there is hope.
