  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If sins were to be ranked by how bad it is, what would be the top 10 sins?

Probably “you shall love your neighbor as yourself”. This commandment of Jesus includes murder but not just murder (Luke 18:20). In fact it encompasses 4 of the 10 commandments including giving false testimony.

Which sin would be worse than murder

If my measure is how much harm the sin does to the other person, then there are probably forms of torture, maiming, etc., that are worse than murder.

(But I'm going to get nightmares if I meditate on that too long, so I think I'll stop now.)

That's up to God, not us. And consider that God is absolute good. A man in San Bernardino is closer to Paris, France, than a man in Anaheim, but both are very far away, so far that there's no real difference between the two.

Pro 6:16 - These six things the LORD hates,
Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:

Pro 6:17 - A proud look,
A lying tongue,
Hands that shed innocent blood,

Pro 6:18 - A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that are swift in running to evil,

Pro 6:19 - A false witness who speaks lies,
And one who sows discord among brethren.

I think of sin as something that separates us from God. If that definition holds up, how can one sin be worse than another? Separate is separate. I don't think it comes in degrees.

From a human perspective, I think wrongful acts that affect others are worse than those that affect only ourselves.

the persistent and final rejection of the Holy Spirit, also known as "blasphemy against the Holy Spirit".
This is a state of mind and heart, not a single transgression, and it is considered unforgivable because it cuts a person off from the very power that brings them to repentance.

  • Matthew 12:31-32:
"Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come".

    • Mark 3:28-29:
"Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin".
    • Luke 12:10:
"And to everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven, but to him who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit it will not be forgiven".

      • Blasphemy is considered a sin where a person has so hardened their heart against the Holy Spirit's work that they refuse to repent, even when faced with undeniable truth.

If you will read the whole account in Matthew 12 you will see that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is.
Stating that Jesus cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.”

Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, “This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.”

This sin was a national sin committed only by the nation of Israel. When Israels rulers reject Jesus as the promised Messiah and the offer of The Kingdom of God. this sin could only be committed by Israel when Jesus was physically on the earth doing miracles by The Holy Spirit, to prove He, Jesus was the promised Messiah of Israel.

Then one was brought to Him who was demon-possessed, blind and mute; and He healed him, so that the blind and mute man both spoke and saw. And all the multitudes were amazed and said, “Could this be the Son of David?”

The result of this sin came in 70 A.D.

Which sin would be worse than murder
37 Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. (Mt 22:37–38)

If this is the first and greatest commandment, wouldn't it follow that breaking it would be the first and greatest sin?

Good question! Many don't differentiate between sins, but the Catholic Church does. I say those that do the most harm such as murder, rape, torture etc. Also, blasphemy against the Holy Spirit because it's not forgivable.

Peace

Absolutely! That isn't comparable to swearing or telling white lies IMO.

This sin will not be forgiven in this world or the next. Hmmm

Mat 12:32 And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but he that shall speak against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him neither in this world, nor in the world to come.

Pharisees: their claim that Jesus was not the Messiah, rather, He was demon possessed. It was on these grounds that the Pharisees rejected the Messiahship of Yeshua. The Messiah’s response is recorded in verses 25-29: And knowing their thoughts he said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: and if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then shall his kingdom stand? And if I by Beelzebub cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges. But if I by the Spirit of God cast out demons, then is the kingdom of God come upon you. Or how can one enter into the house of the strong man, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man?and then he will spoil his house. The Messiah responded to this accusation by telling them that their statement could not be true because it would mean that Satan’s kingdom was divided against itself

.And judgment was pronounced on the generation of that day in verses 30-37:

He that is not with me is against me, and he that gathers not with me scatters. Therefore I say unto you, Every sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men; but the blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him; but whosoever shall speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, nor in that which is to come. Either make the tree good, and its fruit good; or make the tree corrupt, and its fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by its fruit. Ye offspring of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good man out of his good treasure brings forth good things: and the evil man out ofhis evil treasure brings forth evil things. And I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account there of in the day of judgment. For by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned.

In verse 31, that generation had committed the unpardonable sin:blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. It should be clearly comprehended exactly what the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is in the only context in which it is found, and must be interpreted accordingly. The unpardonable sin is not an individual sin, but a national sin. It was committed by that generation of Israel in Jesus’ day and cannot be applied to subsequent Jewish generations. The content of the unpardonable sin was the national rejection of the Messiahship of Yeshua while He was physically present on the grounds that He was demon possessed. This sin was unpardonable, and judgment was set. The judgment came forty years later in A.D. 70 with the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple and the worldwide dispersion of the Jewish people. This does not mean that individual members of that generation could not be saved, for many were. It did mean, however, that nothing they could do would avert the coming destruction of Jerusalem
