Then why didn't Christ call Saint Paul, one of the first Christian leaders to baptize?
"For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect. 1 Cor 1:17, NKJV"

I've always wondered what Catholics had to say about this verse.

Weren't the Corinthians already Baptized? Paul in his epistles is always talking to people who are already Christians. I think the point is also that since anyone can Baptize, he wouldn't need a special commission to do that, but rather he has been given a special charism of preaching the Gospel and explaining it.

What is there to say to questions that assume a single verse can unsurp and invalidate what the rest of Scripture says?

I would think the context of this passage is the most telling. Paul is emphasizing that his ministry is to spread the gospel, not merely to Baptize and leave it at that.

This verse does not undermine the neccessaity of Baptism. It just reaffirms our primary calling to love.

Blessings,

-Davide

But Paul did baptize. It may have not been his major role but it was part of his ministry.

1Cor 1:
14I am thankful that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15so no one can say that you were baptized into my name. 16(Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don't remember if I baptized anyone else.)

Not to mention that it is the great commission from Jesus Christ "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you."

Even if Paul wasn't supposed to be baptizing it would seem it was important enough to include with making disciples of all nations and obedience to the commands of God.

That makes a lot of sense!

I've always thought that context thing was kind of fun.

Edit: To elaborate - That verse where he tells the disciples they're called to go out and baptize all nations and whatnot.

I don't know about the rest of you, but when I am questioned about a deeply held belief, I oftentimes get a little defensive.

I just want to thank you all for your wonderful, well-thought out replies. This type of dialogue goes so far in presenting the truth of our faith, so much better than arguing.

I think that more often than not the person questioning the belief is doing for a good reason. That's what is (sometimes) so great about these boards is that we are able to educate each other about our various faiths.

My thoughts too. Also, it is much nicer to have someone ask questions out of sincereness as Dr. Dave, MD has done and be able to give answers. I like nice discussions, we all walk away learning something and gaining a friend out of the deal too, hopefully... LOL :)

Welcome to the OBOB Dr. Dave, MD.
