  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Icon veneration

Do you put your actual lips to the icon when kissing it?

  • Yes, always.

  • Yes, only if I am one of the firsts to arrive and I don't see any lipstick stains.

  • No, I just kiss very close to the surface.

I kiss the glass very lightly as I usually have lip gloss or light lipstick on at the time when I come into church in the Narthex, so I don't want to smudge a bunch of goop on the glass. And no, I'm not worried about germs. LOL

I kiss the icons and I don't worry about germs. If there is lipstick on the glass, I don't kiss that part. But that doesn't happen that often at my parish which is small. I don't think any of the women put on lipstick before service. Plus, we tend to all ask for blessings from our priest and it would be really gross to leave lipgloss on his hand. Eewwww!

But if you aren't comfortable with it, don't feel that you have to.

M.
I always take a tissue and blot off my little bit of lip gloss or what have you a few minutes before time to go up with Communion. :)

Just an afterthought....correct me if I err....

I have never kissed any "glass." Don't think I would ever bother to kiss glass. It seems a bit antithetical to the theology behind kissing the icon in the first place.

Forgive me.
The glass container for our icons in the Narthex are for switching the icon for whatever feast day or event it is for that Sunday. I think also the glass protects the icon from being marked up. We have Archangel Michael's icon next to that one that isn't in glass that we kiss also.
