• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

If you try protein drinks/etc (PS check out Carnation Instant Breakfasts - loaded with calories), just make sure you don't drink those INSTEAD of eating normally, but in addition to, or you will lose weight, not gain it. You always want to try and eat healthy of course, but salads and greens won't put on weight. Also try to get into some of the foods that you might otherwise normally avoid...crackers, the occasional cheeseburger etc. :) g/l

If it is genetic, then you have nothing to worry about. The majority of women your height would love to have your weight.

Also if it is genetic, it means that the ordinary advice such as what people have given you before, would most likely not work with you. Your metabolism is probably really high.

Whatever you do, do not do anything that is bad to your overall health just to gain some weight. Not to pick on anyone but I heard someone say more salt, less fiber. Not a good idea. Increasing on your protein isn't a good idea once you are getting enough protein. You need to find the reason why you are underweight and find healthy ways to deal with it.

If you have an overactive thyroid gland, fat will melt of you like nothing and you won't be able to gain weight. Do some research to discover the root of the problem and maybe consult a doctor or nutritionist.

Try recording what you eat a few times with a tool like www.cronometer.com. It will give you a clear idea of how many calories you normally eat compared to your Basal Metabolic Rate.

As far as what to eat, focus only on whole plant foods to get your calories from. (e.g. legumes, greens, fruits, berries, nuts, seeds, rice, potatoes, mushrooms, etc. etc.)

As you are 17, I hesitate to give medical advice as you are still growing. A PA or MD dietician is your best source since you are young. They have the proper training for this to help you gain without compromising your heart.
