I just got the official call from the Nursing Dept and I start classes on August 25th!!
I'm so excited, I can't contain it!! It's been a lot of work, and even more is yet to come, but I have wanted to be a nurse so badly.
I'm taking the boys out of state to a theme park later this month and we have a LOT to celebrate!

Congrats to your friend's GF, too!
It's really competitive to get in at my college as well. I've seen it bring out the worst (and best) in people.

I was an accountant for over 20 years. I'm not even sure WHY I was to be honest with you. I have always been good with numbers, etc. but I never really enjoyed it.
I have a friend that was an RN for many years that quit and started teaching swimming lessons. She worked with terminally ill children and it became too much for her. She decided she'd rather work with children that don't have any problems, and that's understandable.
I think I'll probably switch it up a lot so I don't burn out, but my true intent is to nurse for about 3-5 years while working on my Master's degree. I want to eventually teach nursing and that has always been my goal.
I'm not a spring chicken anymore. Teaching seems like a good option for me, and there is a HUGE shortage of teachers right now (that's why there's a HUGE shortage in nurses...there aren't enough people to teach them).
I need the experience under my belt first though, obviously. Plus I know it's something I'll really enjoy--and hate at the same time. It's not an easy job and some people die no matter what you do for them, which is not something I ever want to become hard against. You can cope without losing empathy and I've seen a lot of people lose that empathy.
My younger sister said she was going to watch me like a hawk after I become a nurse. She said she has had some really horrible nurses and then, lol, she said "I just want to see how long you're a nurse before the bitterness sets in".

Rofl. You always can tell the nurses that have been around awhile, can't ya?
Beyond the fact I would be passing out every 10 minutes (lol), I don't think I could do something like that. I tend to have a lack of empathy, for some reason. I've been called cold at times, because I'll come off uncaring or unupset over things. (Like the 3 deaths in my family in the last 2 years - no tears or visable signs of upset, even at the funeral)
I just deal differently. Sometimes, though, patients need that more..caring, sympathetic hand.
Someone who mothers them. I'm sure you'd be great at it, Lainie. You're one of the sweetest people I know. Granted, I want to get into counselling one day...which could be interesting. *lol*

I can see where it would get very disheartening to have people list off their symptoms/ailments yet refuse to change their lifestyle at all. My mom is like that.
Medicine can only do so much, you know?
Our bodies don't crave/need aspirin...a headace is just a symptom of a problem. Americans (including doctors) knows how to cover up the symptom, but not cure the underlying problem.
My son's counselor seems "cold" to me sometimes, but honestly I think she's in the perfect profession. She gives me the straight dope and that's refreshing.
I think the key to being a good counselor is listening, and you're great at that!

I made it through orientation! Woohoo!
Everybody was very nice, but it was a little overwhelming. There was a LOT of information to absorb.
Thankfully everybody was in the same boat in learning all of it, and even though there are definitely some "cliques" formed already (I only knew ONE person from previous classes), they were friendly cliques.
I wanted to share something we received, because it was very touching:
Being a nurse means.....
You will never be bored.
You will always be frustrated.
You will be surrounded by challenges.
So much to do and so little time.
You will carry immense responsibility
and very little authority.
You will step into people's lives
and you will make a difference.
Some will bless you.
Some will curse you.
You will see people at their worst-
and at their best.
You will never cease to be amazed
at people's capacity for
love, courage, and endurance.
You will see life begin - and end.
You will experience resounding triumphs
and devastating failures.
You will cry a lot.
You will laugh a lot.

I have to write a paragraph about why I chose Nursing before the 25th. I've sat down to write it about ten times now and there isn't anything I can pinpoint enough to put down.
There's several reasons I chose Nursing. Financial stability, empathy for others, love of science and God's creations....but I'm just not sure how to put it all into a neat little paragraph.
