  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ah, I got it. Same psychology as a serial killer, just don't have to worry about the law. I still think someone's a sissy for getting off killing an animal when there is such an abundance of people.

Why not reintroduce predators?
We have accounts of societies trying that, it ends up to be a mess or the predators suffering when the balance shifts. Besides, our being the predator allows us to scale back when the need arises whereas wild predatory animals don't seem to follow direction well.
Is it really fun to kill a deer? Is the fun part watching life slowly drain out of their eyes? Or is it the blood? What's the turn on here?

The whole package; although, I could do without the gutting and processing part. Once you get past the intrigue of it, it is mundane compared to the excitement of the rest.

as a vegetarian, this is a sensitive subject for me. Because my family hunted for a very long time. Now they don't hunt anymore, and I'm a vegetarian. THEY hunted for food, still occassionally fish now and again, and they eat everything that they killed.

Do I think its right to kill animals? No. Do I think its sinful? I cannot say. I'm not God. BUT I think unless you're family is hungry and you had no money for real food, it would be permissable to hunt.

I DON'T agree with factory farms, where thousands of animals are bred just to be slaughtered inhumanely. Thats just my opinion though. ^^

Let me know if this post is inappropriate to this thread please.

Predators are reintroduced, but by the nature, they are slow to rebound and recover.

I haven't killed a deer, but I've killed animals before. It's not really fun, so much as was a necessity at the time. My main concern at the times were reducing any possible suffer the animal might have felt.

Regardless of that, hunting is still a primal urge within people, we are omnivores, afterall. Unlike neaderthals, we have long limbs, so we are built for hunting, rather than scavaging.

As a biologist, hunting for me is more about keeping a population in check as well as being out in the quiet outdoors.

I think hunting is OK if you're doing it for a food source. Some people have no other options. But killing animals just for the fun of it is disturbing, imo.

Men hunting is no more strange than women shopping, they are just part of our nature having been part of a hunter gather society.

Women shopping are not killing animals for the fun of it. I have no problem with hunting as a food source, as I stated above. But people who go out and shoot animals just for the fun of it and then leave the dead animal where it fell it not only disturbing to me, but wasteful as well. If you're going to take a life, take responsibility for it and eat it! That's how I see it.

Oh, I completely agree. Hunting an animal and leaving it to rot is wrong and unnatural (from the hunter point of view).

However, there are a few instances where hunting and leaving an animal to rot may be necessary in areas where a non-native population is rapidly taking over and destroying an environment. Or, in the case of an animal being a pest and being too small to eat.

Is hunting immoral? I like to ask questions of these sorts, as noone can come up with a clear answer.

Well, I'm not a hunter, but I have nothing against it. I have friends that hunt. I get gifts of wild game from them occasionally. It's a novelty that I enjoy. There's nothing in the Bible that says we can't hunt. So I'd have to say, No, hunting is not immoral.

I hate the idea of killing a living thing, because if it's out in nature and doing its own thing I feel that I have no right to take its life. I'd much rather take its picture instead.

At the same time, I understand the need to cull large numbers of animals. We had a problem with deer in my area too, though it seems to be taken care of now. They were just everywhere, and sadly we humans had to step in and take the place of their predators because they were so many that they were damaging everything, and eating to the point where they'd start starving because there was nothing left (Not too much of a problem during summer, but during winter....)

I could hunt to kill an animal, but if I did it'd be out of necessity. I'd do it the most humane way possible, and then I'd take time to be grateful for the life I took from the animal so I could sustain my own. I'd probably actually comfort it as it died and thank it for giving its life so I could eat.

I think that's the problem today... we're not grateful or respectful at all to the animals who give us food. We just mistreat them, kill them, and sell them for dinner. If we were one day without all our cattle and chickens and piggies that we love to eat so much, and all had to become vegetarians overnight, I think we might be a little more grateful for what these animals provide for us by giving their own lives (and most of the time anymore their lives are miserable, thanks to factory farming).

Anyway, just my two cents. :)

This is why I do long distance solo backpacking, no better way to enjoy nature then getting way out there, alone. And I don't kill while I'm out there. That said, I don't see anything wrong with hunting if it's done to provide food for the hunter and his or her family. Also, it keeps some populations in check that would otherwise grow out of control. Now, poaching is immoral, and I think hunting strictly for sport is also.

Of course not. God put the animals here for our use. We've gone through all this before, but--to those who object to hunting, fishing or trapping. If you eat meat, or use any animal products, your arguements are moot.
I think taking a kid hunting is one of the best ways to teach them about how nature really operates. We have a society today where the vast majority of people are living out of touch with the cycle of life and death in the natural world. We think our meat should come to us shrink wrapped and sanitized.

Saying hunting is about killing is like saying hiking is about walking, you're not getting the whole picture.
Even if I don't kill anything, a day hunting still beats a day working.

Immoral? I don't think it is. Unless you are hunting illegally.

But the rest of your post made me laugh at your...reasoning. If you hunt and you kill what you hunt you do so because you want to kill something, period. Saying that is not the case is simply...stupid.

You may wish to refrain from speaking FOR people, I happen to ALSO like the taste of venison, duck, squirrel, etc. and it isn't exactly something I can pick up fresh from the local grocer. Trying to narrow it to the limited application you would like to apply AT someone is, how you say...
"Saying that is not the case is simply...stupid."

But I'll give credit to the coverage on legal season... as others have mentioned.

I think hunting, if it is to be done, should be done without guns.

Use a bow and arrow. Or better yet, a knife.

It's not much of a sport if one side has all the power.

Actually with today's technology, the compound bows are almost as good as a gun (not rifle).
But I tried the knife from the trees route, it can get messy. :D

I take it you don't eat your meat from living animals. You could. You want the animal dead.

Next.
