How can I pray for more than a few minutes? I feel like anything beyond that and I turn into a broken record just asking for things I want. I'd like to "mature" but I don't know how...

Praying is simply talking to God.....
Its not this grandious thing people think it is.
No matter where you are,you can always talk (pray) to God.
If its 5 mins to 2 hrs interceeding for others.

If you are not sure how to pray, use the Psalms to tailor your own prayers. Believe me, there are many therein you can use, so feel free to paraphrase them as needed for your own use.How can I pray for more than a few minutes? You will know you are building a relationship with Jesus when your prayers become broder and more natural. And not necessarily long, either. You can pray for less than a minute and still have an effective prayer if the prayer is from your heart, and your faith that your prayer will be answered is fully on God. However, you really must have scriptures in your heart and you do this by reading your Bible. Also, join a good Bible study group. Beth Moore has an online course. She's my favorite at this time.

Praying isn't just about speaking to God. I think praying is mostly about listening to God. It is through prayer that we communicate with God, and it's a two way street. Talk some, listen some. Have a good conversation.

Just be yourself, as well. Dont feel like God will only listen to you if you are using overly poetic rhetoric. Most of my prayers are honestly broken sentances punctuated with cuss words. I know there are times to be respectful to God, and times when I can talk to him like I were talking to a friend.
Also, if it helps, try typing your prayers. I've done it and its helped me before. Gods just looking to hear from you so it doesnt have to be anything special.

No one has mentioned this, but one of the best tactics of the enemy is to stall you out in prayer. Ever had that feeling like you had something to pray about, but just couldn't get the words past your lips? Enemy. Many times just speaking a word of scripture breaks that hold and you start praying. I also like to take scripture and pray it back over my circumstances and over people.
For instance - let me just pray for you right now as an example! Father, thank you for this brother's desire to pray to You. Give ear to his prayer, God, and don't hide yourself from his supplication. Give heed to him and answer him. Help him not to be restless in his complaint or to be distracted because of the voice of the enemy or the pressure of others... (Psalm 55:1-3)... help him to call upon You for You are the One who answers and saves. He can talk to you all day long and You will hear his voice. I thank You that You will redeem his soul in peace from the battle that rages against him. You will hear and answer him. Help him to cast his burden on You so that You can sustain him. You will never allow the righteous to be shaken. (Psalm 55:16-19, 22-23)
I love to pray through Ephesians... it's great training.

lvbeads - you've gotten a lot of good suggestions. I understand what you're saying. Someone said the Lord told them not to ask for anything for 6 months and they quickly realized that they had to make some changes. That's what happened to me.
Since that time I've learned a couple of things about prayer.
Pray without ceasing (I Thess 5:17) is like when you're getting dressed for the day, from the news you know to pray for certain ones; pray for your family as you head out the door; see an accident, a crying child, an elderly person struggling, etc. Learned how important praise is (Heb 13:15, Isa 61:3).
There's also a private time in your prayer closet (Matt 6:6), use the Lord's prayer as your model such as begin with praise (they praised Yahweh when they entered the tabernacle +Psa 100:4). Pray scriptures that pertain to what you're praying about (Heb 4:12) plus Psalms is full of prayers. Also, I play worship music (Col 3:16).

In the bible it says how pharisees did the long show prayers, they get their reward from man, but we who do it for the right reasons (To get attention from God, not man.) will get our reward from God. Prayer, this has been an issue with me lately, knowing God's will in my life. I think the same solution works here. Pray about it and read scripture, and we'll learn(and live it!) what is good in his sight and by living it and praying his plan for our lives should become clear.

I know that my prayers over the past couple of months have been for the same thing - to the point where I have asked God to use a 2 x 4 if he needs to!

well prayer is more than just asking for things, make it more conversational, get use to just talking to him about how you feel, just talking... just open up and speak from your heart and before you know it you'll have been praying for a while. think of him as a friend you can confide in and pour all your cares on him, whatever you feel like talking about, talk to him about it. and make times to just sit and listen, wait on him, it more just flowing with how you feel, not following structure.
just relax and begin to tell him how you feel. talk to him about your needs, your happiness, your sorrows, your worries...dont ask him for things, talk to him about your problems and ask him to help.
this is best to follow worship...so that you are in a mood to flow with the spirit of God and not tense or twisted up in side. create an atmosphere with worship, and then go into prayer and just talk to him about your troubles or whatever you want to talk him about.
