I was right then, just stay at home and the guy that has the opening will miraculously call you and hire you on the phone.

No need to even leave the house any more, God has it all planned anyway, why waste the time going out.
Or you can do the Lord's will and gain his favor. I don't think a last second prayer will help much.

Lets give a hypothetical here. Say there are two people up for one job promotion. Both are devout Christians and both pray to God for the same thing namely so they get the new position. How does one gain favor in Gods eyes when praying?

There is no way to gain favor in the way that you are referring to.

G-d is not a vending machine of blessing, that if you pray the right way, do the prescribed steps, and if you do it facing Jerusalem at the specific time of the month, during the holy year, at point where the moon is full, and the wind is blowing towards the north at 5 mph or higher..........

Then G-d will have favor on you, and give you the job you want.

No.... G-d doesn't do that.

When you look at Kind David, he had sent Samuel to Jesse, and checked out all 7 of his sons, and all were rejected.

Do you think that all of them were less than David? It's impossible to know, and yet G-d's favor fell toward David. But we don't know that his favor didn't go to his other sons, do we?

There is no way to make G-d favor anyone over any other.

Perhaps there is a better place G-d wishes to move someone. Perhaps G-d knows giving someone a particular blessing will have a bad influence. Perhaps G-d knows the timing is not right.

And maybe even G-d wishes to test a person to see if they will still believe that G-d knows what is best, when something they want isn't given to them.

That's the worst one for me. But it is what it is.

They both have favor no matter the outcome, because they are both doing the will of the Lord.

God knows what is the best choice in a plethora of ways, pray for his will to be done in everything.

We can't gain favour with God by doing stuff, nor lose favour with God by failing to do stuff. He works with us on the basis of grace. Blessings are given out as he chooses, independent of our own qualities or lack thereof. The idea behind grace assumes that not only does neither person deserve a job promotion, but that both deserve to be damned to hell immediately. So any blessing that either receives has nothing to do with them. Prayer doesn't make God do things for you; that would be an entitlement mentality. People who make that mistake have a funny idea of Jesus' teaching, "Ask and it shall be given." Clearly this doesn't work a lot of the time we want it to, so either Jesus was off in la-la-land, or everyone else misunderstands him.

Neither get a response, they are praying selfishly, treating God as if he were Santa Clause!

I’m not sure God would intervene in the situation you provided because I believe it would infringe on the free will of the person doing the hiring but a good way to pray is to use the ACTS acronym.

A-Adoration give adoration and glory to God

C-Confess your sins

T-Thanksgiving give thanks to God

S-Supplication humbly make your request to God.

I tend to add the phrase if it pleases you Lord or if it be your will Lord before making requests and sometimes after my request I might say your will be done Lord I know you know what is best for me. And of course I suggest always end a prayer in Jesus name I pray...Amen

One prays that God's will be done, and that one's actions and behavior will give glory to God.

IMO, that's the wrong attitude to have.
1. Christians should be praying that God's will be done, or that X is what the Lord wants them to do/the right place for them to be; not that they would get a job, which might turn out not to be good for them.
2. This makes it sound that God is a divine boss/Father Christmas, and that if someone gets on his good side, they will be given what they want.
3. See number 1; it shouldn't be about what they want.

2 Chronicles 7:14 But that's to Israel , same as when God said give offerings to my house and try me .

But maybe his purpose was for you to get the job not the other person , then you would be praying against his will .

If you read the NT, God's will is always about BEING;
It is God's will that we should be holy, 1 Thessalonians 4:3
It is God's will that we should be joyful always, pray at all times and give thanks in all circumstances, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
It is God's will that we should believe in Jesus, John 6:39-40
It is also God's will that we listen to his Son, that we obey the command he gave us to love, that we go into the world to witness to Jesus, etc.

I'm not aware of any Scripture that says, "It is God's will that you have a specific job, and no other" - i.e he will be angry if you become a teacher rather than a nurse.

Besides, if it is God's will that you get a specific job, you will get it. If it is his will that someone else gets the job, it doesn't matter how hard you pray and tell him that you want it.

Why?

He didn't micromanage Adam's life - he told him not to eat from a tree and then left the decision to him.
He didn't micromanage the rich young ruler's life - he said "follow me" and was sad when the man didn't.
He didn't micromanage Paul's life - he once opened a door for Paul to go to Troas, but Paul didn't see Timothy there, so he left again, 2 Corinthians 2:12-13.

Jesus called people and invited them to come to him/follow him; he didn't push them into it or drag them kicking and screaming.
