  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How should I start this?

Hello,

I am new to this relationship that is Christianity. I need and want to work my way through the Holy Bible, but I could use some help figuring out where to begin and how. I just need some guidance to get me started from some of you who have followed the same path as I have.

Thank you all in advance,
Jon-Michael

Hi Jon-Michael! Welcome to the Christian family.

The Bible can be a tough book to get through if you try to read from cover to cover. I would suggest that you read the New Testament first, and read it slowly and a little bit at a time. BUT, before you start reading each time, I would suggest that you say a short prayer for the Holy Spirit to open you mind to what the Word says.

One way is to start with Mark (it's chronological), then Matthew (there's more detail than Mark), then John (it provides even more detail), then Luke and Acts (Acts is a continuation of Luke), then the rest of the New Testament.

Let me add that after you have read the New Testament, if you want to read the entire Bible, there are lots of books that will help you read the Bible in a Year (I've done this as well).

You have gotten some great advice from PerkyCurlz.

I would also suggest you find a good Bible teaching church, if you havent found one already. You may want to visit several churches and pray about it to see which one God wants you at.

Once you have a good church, try to make some Christian friends, or speak to the pastor about finding a mentor, a more mature Christian who can answer your questions as they arise and guide you as needed.

As far as reading the Bible, I agree with the above advice. The new testament is a good place to start. I would also suggest Psalms and Proverbs. Psalms is full of wonderful truths about God and his love. (Psalms 103 in particuar.) Proverbs is filled with great, useful advice.

In the New Testament, after the gospels, you will find tons of good advice on Christian living, how we are to treat others, etc.

Pray about it, God will help guide you to what he wants to reveal to you.

Hey my brother in Christ, Jon-Michael

I praise God when I hear that you have gotten to know Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. :)

Although I myself grew up in a christian family, we (the kids) were given the right to decide for ourselves at the age of 13-15. My two sisters are not christians today, but I am. I began searching for God at the age of 14, I read the whole New Testament at the age of 15-16, and at the age of 16, God revealed Himself to me in supernatural ways. :)

I am glad that you want to sit down and experience the Word of God, because it is a Living Word. I would encourage you to start reading gospels. Mark is a nice start, it is short, and it's filled with "action". John is a bit longer, and it explains the mysteries of Christ, so that Jesus may meet you in a special way. Matt and Luke+Acts, are also as good as the rest (I love the whole Bible. :) ).

Here's my thought:

pray to God in the name of Jesus, that the Holy Spirit (that you have gotten since you confess Jesus as Lord) may guide you and teach you as you read the Bible.

start reading Mark (16 chapters), then go on to John. Later you should read, Matt, Luke and Acts.

you should also read Psalms, and Proverbs.

Romans (located just after Acts) is a good book, it gives you an understanding of how we are free from sin, and justified before God.

I wish - that's pray - you all well in your walk with Jesus Christ. Walk with Him daily, and always be ready to praise God the Father for His love and grace.

may the love of God, the grace of Christ and the community of the Holy Spirit be with you

your brother in Christ

Magnus :)

And from me!

Lot's of good advice here.

As well as the gospels, I would read some of the shorter new Testament "epistles" (which just means "letters") early on.

Great Post! Also, it is important to have a bible were you actually understand what you're reading. You may want to get a teen bible or a living bible. The wording wont be as confusing as KJ or NKJ. Also, there are a lot of commentary books out there.. like Vernon McGee's Thru the Bible. In his commentaries, he goes through each verse and explains it in deeper detail, and/or gives background information. It is VERY informative and makes reading the bible through extremely enjoyable...

There is no formula as to how often you MUST read, just remember though, when you pray, thats you talking to God, when you read the bible, that's God talking to you.. in order for a relationship to be healthy and successful.. there has to be 2-way communication. So keep reading, and keep praying!!

God bless
