  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

What's the farthest back you've been able to go in your family tree? I won't make you give me sources, but let me know if it's mostly speculation, or if you're sure. :)

So far, I've gone back to the 1600's, and I'm pretty sure everything's correct. I still have a lot of work to do, though.

On my Mom's side of the family, you can go back pretty far. I'm not a hundred percent sure because I hardly know a thing about that side of the family. On my dad's side, unfortunately, we can only go back to the early 1900's. The only person who knew any of the family history never talked about it and has long been dead. I did come across some names back from the 1500's who were Polish aristocrats during the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth but there is no way to confirm that they are distant family since there are no records.

Definitely back into the mists of time here...

I am lucky enough that my 5x great grandmother was descended from a lot of European Royalty.

Some of my ancestors are classed as "semi-legendary"

Her husband my 5x gt grandfather's line also goes way back.
One other line goes back to 1405, but most of them only traceable to the 1570s and later.

One line I haven't got back before 1802 yet, but thats my worst one

On my mother's side, back to Edward Culver who came to America in 1635 and from whom every Culver (or Colver) in America is descended. There are no Culvers in England as he adopted the last name when he arrived here.

On my father's side, definitely back to 1735 when our namesake settled in what is now West Virginia. We have fairly definite sources tracing our family back to the Roman Empire when our name was first adopted. Two Roman Catholic saints are in our family line and there is a church dedicated to one in Bavaria, I believe.

I've gotten back to 1548 with Nicholas, Lord Kellogg on one branch.
With the Merrill's i've gone back to Thomas who was born in 1444.
With the Bradford's i've gone back to Robert Bradfourth who was born in 1435. He is 6 generations further back from Gov. William Bradford of Plymouth, MA (being the 7th generation) who came over on the Mayflower.

I was ready to throw in the towel, kept reading and researching and I'm actually getting somewhere. I'm adopted and things haven't always been my privilege to know but that's opening up due to both sides being ready.
The most important part of this for me is the medical history it can provide as I've found female cancers are common on my biological-mother's side.
I'm at Grandparents history right now.

On my Mother's side, we have been able to trace it to the 1500's.

Genetic DNA goes back farther than that, and because I belong to Haplogroup I, it is speculated that an ancestor might have been from Abraham and Keturah (his second wife).

Fathers side Early 15th century from the Alsace region.

Mothers side mid 17th century England (although pretty sure originally Scottish if we can document far enough back)

Alas no Royalty but some Nobility.

On my mom's dad's side, I'm 95% sure I can trace back to about 1755 (Obediah Roy Mellott & Mary Wink), and if that's correct, there's fairly decent evidence back to 1580. On my dad's dad's side, I'm 100% sure I can trace back to about 1749 (Humphrey Chilcote or Chilcoat or Chilcott - depending...usually the first two & Sarah Ensor).

On mom's mom's side, about 1747 (Jacob Hendershot & most likely Effie Paugh, but not 100% sure of her)

I've been to the grave sites of The latter two and they are definitely "family" grave sites that have been informally verified (the Chilcott is 100% verified) for years through family tradition....only need papers to formally verify.
