As an Adventist I find that members tend to give her veneration. Even in the lesson study she is mentioned more times than Jesus. I believe that the veneration members have for her borders on idolatry.. Sis White says this, Sister white says that. Instead of asking what Jesus says about something church members are ready to quote Mrs. White.
I believe the SDA church is using her books to make money. Christ should be the centre of the Church the thought of even asking the question

A question like this shows that she is perceived to be the head of the church. Christianity is about JESUS. God specifically says. HE WILL NEVER SHARE HIS GLORY WITH ANOTHER.

Ellen White is essential enough to Seventh-day Adventists that they have gone on record....

I'm an SDA who wants nothing to do with the writings of Ellen white, it hasn't stopped me from being an SDA up until now so I would say she's not essential.

E.G. White might be essential to the SDA BUT not essential to Christianity. Jesus is the author and founder of Christianity. If E.G. White had to be removed, what would the church do...crumble. I think we need to speak more of Jesus. I am going to be tarred and feathered. But I believe that I am a Christian first..and a member of the SDA church. We are making her into a female pope. IDOLATRY is a grave sin.

I think you are right in that there are some members/churches/conferences that almost idolize her. This is not the beleif of the whole denomination however. Personally, I feel she was raised up to expound the teachings of Christ and to prepare His people for His return. Almost a John the Baptist figure.... and just like is happening today, there were those 2000 years ago that were worshipping John. That didn't make John irrelevent just as sister White isn't irrelevent today.

If you believe she is a Prophet than why worry about it? Same thing with if you believe she isn't. I think it's funny though how several people who aren't Adventist anymore, first started their drift away from the church by doubting/discrediting Sr White. But hey, maybe it's just conincidence.

Same here. Most I hear from say thus and so isn't done in their local assembly church. Therefore one has to mention the whole church as general rule to keep this type of denial at a minimum. Just say anything in GT and find out if that isn't so.

While not one myself, I am friends with many Seventh Day Adventists, and currently do a bible study with a few. From what I have been told by all the ones I know which is a small church worth, Ellen White is indeed a prophet for them. Like EastCoastRemnant said, very much like a "John the Baptist" figure.
However many (not all) of them do hold the perspective that their faith does indeed rest on Ellen White being a true prophet. They have told me if any of her writings were found to be false, their faith would not exist. However they know that she is the real deal and so their faith is strong.
Now I am in no way saying all SDA's feel this way as is obvious from other posts here. Frankly, without Ellen White, I am sympathetic with the belief. With her writings, I quite enjoyed the The Great Controversy and The Desire of Ages. I felt they were very well written and very fascinating. So I can say nothing "bad" about her or the faith... nor would I want to.

Being SDA ALL of my life, I can say that her writings are very good. However, I believe it is the way they are utilized. It should never be that one's faith is dependent on the veracity of her writings. but once again it is how it is presented to one and it's inferred importance. I know of people who made life altering decisions based on her writings, only to find out that is not what was said and/or meant by the statements upon which their decision was made. I have come across some extremely angry people, and who can blame them?
When I teach SS, I rarely use her writings, even the note supplied with the Teacher's quarterly/s because I had rather based everything I say on the Bible without question. i find that it is far too easy to use her writings as an extension of the Bible, i.e., if it is not meantioned in the Bible but in her writings it is just as good.............not.........So then I believe it is these types of things which turn people off from her writings when they are in fact very valuable.
