Jesus connected a few things during His earthly ministry to salvation. The ones that immediately come to my mind are from John's gospel (the truly, truly [or, amen, amen] declarations are a bit of a giveaway):
  • “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God." John 3:5
  • "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me, has eternal life." John 5:24
  • “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you." John 6:53
  • "Truly, truly, I say to you, if any one keeps my word, he will never see death.” John 8:51
Here there's a combination of faith (you must believe) and action (you must do). It's necessary for you to cooperate with God in order to gain salvation, and there's so much more to do than what I listed- otherwise we wouldn't have 27 books.

Some people say it is all God's work and YOU don't do a thing. Some say you have to believe and repent and God will save you. Some say that you have to work out your own salvation. A few say everybody is saved. So how do you get saved and is it all God's work, some your own work, or something else?
All of the above.
(Ok, not the everyone is saved though)

(By the way that bit about "work out your own salvation" is from Paul in Philippians. It's so much better to read fully through epistles.)

Another wonderful section:

12Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

ROMANS.5:12-21 = Death in Adam, Life in Christ
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned— 13 (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. 15 But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many. 16 And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned. For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification. 17 For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

18 Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. 19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous.

20 Moreover the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, 21 so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
.
.

HEBREWS.9:22 = 22 And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.(cf; LEVITICUS.17:11)
.
.

ROMANS.10:8-17 = 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. 13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

14 How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written:

“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace,
Who bring glad tidings of good things!”

16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?” 17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
.

.

JOHN.3:14-18 = 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. 18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _

People need to be told that because of inherited Adam's Original Sin, all of them are going to hell when they die = they need a Saviour/Christ/Messiah to save them from hell and gift them eternal life in the kingdom of God/heaven through belief/faith in Jesus Christ, and not through the good works of the Law.

Believe in Jesus, trust his sacrifice on the cross as atonement for your sins - past, present and future.

Search for righteousness and salvation with all your heart and do not rest until you get a "Yes, you're saved" from God. Do not be the foolish virgin, make sure you have oil in your lamp and are ready for Christ to come.

If you genuinely accept God's atonement by the blood of Christ, you are saved and have eternal life and will forever be God's.

You have freewill and are responsible for your sins, seeking salvation with all your heart and accepting salvation. Enter the strait gate.

Many on here add to the gospel and burden man. Christ's command is not burdensome, as he has said in scripture.

A Roman soldier was allowed to ask someone to carry his gear for a mile.

Jesus taught: "Whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two." Matthew 5:41 (WEB)

If I can do nothing else, I can remember some of Jesus' sayings. Jesus came to serve and wanted his disciples to do the same.

How do you get saved? From what? (let me play devil's advocate for a moment)
Does a person want to "get saved"? Is "getting saved" something one pursues?

Why would one want to "get saved", unless they knew they were "lost"?

It probably starts with conviction.
The supernatural realization that we are out of fellowship with God.

The horror of finding an empty hole in our soul that can
only be filled with a restored relationship to God.

But we need help getting to the solution.
We depend on other believers to "bring us" to a right relationship with God.

How do you get saved? We can't do it by ourselves, that's for sure.

Beyond that... Everyone has their own story. How did you get saved?

Salvation comes when there's an awareness/revelation of your need of a Savior (when we believe in faith, but understand why we believe in faith). It is true that sometimes God appoints a place in time when that revelation drops on you, but some people receive that revelation when people (pastors, family members, friends, etc.) place a seed in you when you are a child and eventually it grows, still the harvest belongs to the Lord.

We are to work, but we work FROM that revelation that we are saved, not to earn it. We work/keep growing to become more aware, revelation becomes more clear about why we serve God and why we are called His children. Our identity in Christ becomes more clear, our love for the Lord becomes real because we now understand all He wants is His creation back and Jesus made it possible. We were sinners in need of a Savior, now we are sons and daughters who sin but with a connection to our God are shown what is sin, why we shouldn't sin and how to keep growing in sanctity.

You need to understand salvation, and I suspect those that talk about it most understand it least.

We have a loving God. He forgives. However, he also disciplines those who need discipline. The Lord gets us out of messes we get ourselves in to because of our sin. I guess you would call that salvation. He also expects us to learn from our mistakes.

You are right. There will be about 60 answers that don't agree. For that reason I don't get where all of these folks draw their thoughts from but I (we) refer to the King James Version of the Bible or Scripture as the Word of God which pretty much has the answer. Believe in Jesus Christ, Repent of your sins, Be baptized in the name of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. To believe in Jesus is to understand that he is the only begotten son of God. That he took your sins on His shoulders and in turn, your belief in Him is to include knowing that your sins past, present, and future are forgiven. Repent, that means to regret, to turn away from, to push away, to not ever want to do again. Does that mean that you won't sin? Absolutely not. Because you are forgiven and because you repented doesn't mean you achieved perfection or you wont ever sin again. You haven't achieved perfection and you will sin again. What it means is that you have turned your life's direction and are on the path to eternal salvation. And because of your faith and your belief and your repenting then you can trust that no man can stand between you and our Lord.

What it also means is that your sins were forgiven and the fact that you will sin again is forgiven. And if you have come to love Jesus for his sacrifice and for his promises of eternal salvation you will show His love to others through your actions. Do you have to work for it? No. You can't. It is impossible to work your way into salvation. It is impossible to buy your salvation. Only profession of your faith in Jesus Christ will give you salvation. When the bible speaks of works, it means doing those things you do out of Love for Christ. Paul was an enemy of the Christian movement until he encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus. That started a chain of events that turned Paul (or Saul as he was known then) into the most committed servant of Jesus Christ known to man. That is why his letters are so revered in our bible today. He didn't just begin walking the walk for Jesus. He took on prisons and haters and the powers of nations to spread the Word of God.

As for why there are so many versions of the Bible as we know it, I can tell you that many people want to own your salvation. They also want to cull what they don't like so they can obtain ownership of the Word. And they want to change the early translations into modern verbiage, but I can tell you that they do not represent the actual meaning as translated between the Latin and Greek and the English as is found in the King James Version.

That depends on your definition or concept of salvation. Salvation to me means to be healthy, wealthy, educated, and liberated. Once these things are accomplished, then the individual will experience heaven and not hell which are both states of consciousness and material and psychological conditions.

Read the Scriptures with a humble heart. With a humble heart, ask God to show you the answer. He is merciful and gracious. He will show you the answer through the scriptures..

With great humility, I asked Him to help me see and I was shown this:

Hebrews 9 - 11. But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; 12. Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

And I realised that I am eternally redeemed by the precious blood of the Lamb.

I was blind and now I see. :)

We are saved by Grace through Faith apart from works. God does the saving as dead men can't save themselves.

Eph 2:1–10 (ESV)
2 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

You get saved by repenting, being baptized in Jesus name, and receiving the gift of the holy ghost. If there is anywhere where that's changed...and there is some third covenant or something someone would have to show me that.

Isn't it obvious that living men and women are not dead?

But are they really alive? All people are born spiritually dead.

In addition to Ephesians cf:Col 2:13–14 (ESV)

13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross

Something did change.....God’s program changed on this side of the Cross....After the stoning Of Stephen, God was fed up with the rejection of His Son by the Jews and decided to present a plan of salvation for the gentiles to make the Jews envious.Jesus personally presented to His chosen messenger to the gentiles, Paul, a new way to get saved, completely bereft Of works....you will find
Paul’s Gospel In 1cor15:1-4.......Believe Jesus died for your sins and was brought back from the dead after 3 days.....Paul says believe that ONLY and you will be saved.....add to his Gospel with works and you pervert it and the Cross of Christ will not benefit you. This new Gospel is what saves today and puts you into the Body of Christ where you are untouchable. It is the Gospel thAt God will ask you about on Judgement Day.It is the Gospel thAt is hidden from those that perish.Serious stuff, this Gospel of Paul——be very careful what you do with it. God bless.

So you meant to say "spiritually dead"? What exactly has that to do with "saving themselves"?

Some people say it is all God's work and YOU don't do a thing. Some say you have to believe and repent and God will save you. Some say that you have to work out your own salvation. A few say everybody is saved. So how do you get saved and is it all God's work, some your own work, or something else?

I don't hold to the idea that God drags a person kicking and screaming into His kingdom. I wouldn't ever say a person's salvation is their doing, either. The truth is in between these extremes. It seems very evident to me that God takes the initiative in bringing people to salvation. He accomplished the Atonement through Christ; He fashioned the Gospel message which is the "power of God unto salvation"; He makes us able to respond positively to all that He's done to bring us out of darkness into His marvelous light. But God does not force us to be saved; at some point, we must choose to humbly respond in faith to the Gospel and receive God's salvation.

Salvation is a Person, not a thing. Salvation is coming into relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Doing so is accomplished in a fairly straightforward way:

1. Humbly acknowledge that you're a sinner in desperate need of a Saviour:

James 4:8-10
8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
9 Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

1 John 1:8-10
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

Romans 3:23
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

2. Believe and confess that Christ is your Saviour and Lord:

Romans 10:9-13
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
11 For the Scripture says, "Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame."
12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him.
13 For "whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved."

John 3:14-16
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

3. Repent of (turn from) a life lived centered upon oneself and turn to one centered upon God:

Matthew 4:17
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Mark 1:14-15
14 ...Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent and believe the gospel.

Acts 3:19
19 Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out...

Either Paul preached the wrong gospel and peter who was given the keys from JEsus himself...and walked with JEsus himself...had the right one (acts 2:38) or you're taking one passage out of context.... based off the wording alone....and the fact this chapter is part of the apostles doctrine (written to churches to teach them how to sanctify themselves and continue to walk in salvation) I would say you're taking this way out of context.

1. That's not an introductory salvation text...you're using it as such for some reason. These people are already saved.... that's why the bible verses say this. (and again...this was written to a church....just like any other epistle.....)

1 Corinthians 15:1-4 King James Version (KJV)
15 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;

2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

Comment: That's why they can simply continue to believe in the Gospel to and they are good...becuase they are already living it. In fact receive here means to receive with the mind...it means to have in them... but also Paul says they stand in this gospel!. They have already repented, been baptized, and have the holy ghost.... Besides if Paul was saying hey....this is salvation!! he would contradict what Peter said in acts 2....but also contradict his own teachings...take a look.

Romans 6 as a whole is a good example....

But ima focus on these here.... in 2 cori. 7:10 "Godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation. 1 peter 3:21...."baptism doth now save us." titus 3:5 that we are saved by the "washing of regeneration and renewing of the HOly Ghost.

Paul didn't go against Peter....the bible even says he had an ecnourtor with Jesus in the desert... All scripture is given by the inspiration of God!
