  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What you say also connects with the dynamic of saying one supports others within the Body of Messiah and yet speaks of them in both verbal/physial terms that the Lord tolerates them while he loves others more so who are more observant in other areas than others (in their view).

The Two-Law opinion does indeed sub-categorize gentiles! We, as gentiles, are either a part of the family or we are not, no two-ways about it. What ever was/is good for the Jew to do belongs to the gentile who has attached themselves thru faith to Israel or it isn't. I believe the Torah and Yeshua says that we ARE to obey the same commands. If we don't, we are not part of God's people, or, at the least, we are outside of God's will for our earthly lives. Just simply believing isn't the cure-all ticket; there is a standard of right-living that God requires of all who will come before Him.

to be honest - i'm still confused in regard to Messianic -Judaism . but i think its misunderstanding mixed with perception based on upbringing.

for instance- when i hear the term "Messianic" it makes me think the person is Jewish/Israeli who believes in Yeshua
when i think of "Judaism" --its a Jewish and/or Israeli person who does not yet believe that Yeshua is the Messiah and insists adherence to the law as a means of salvation

so when these two terms are put together - it forms a point of confusion .as from perceived appearance -it makes one think of a Jewish/Israeli who believe that Yeshua is the Messiah -are baptized into his death but still insist adherence to the law ....to maintain salvation .

now i'm not saying its ANY of these things .(because i'm still mildly confused lol )

i'm just saying, from different gentile upbringings - these are the type of confusions that arise due to different understanding of the terminology used. such as, when the two words .
Messianic and Judaism are put together .
it creates a perceived- paradox? or is it oxymoron? of sorts, through misunderstanding ..(almost like some one saying they are an "islamic-christian"

hope that all made sense

Modern day Jewish or Gentiles believers who are Judaizers insist that to be part of the people of God, one must live like a Jew (with or without circumcision).

A lot of the insistence seems to often come from not realizing what it means to live according to the Law of God. The Torah says ONE LAW for the native-born and the stranger. Anyone who does not believe this can read Leviticus.

Nonetheless, even with that, the "One Law" had clear diistinctions for both GENTILES in the Land of Israel and the Hebrews...and of course, there were also the realities of Gentiles outside of the Land of Israel who were believers.

Deuteronomy 14:21 is one of the main examples of what it is that is noted in the Gentiles/foreigners within Israel being given differing laws..as the text states plainly, "Do not eat anything you find already dead. You may give it to the foreigner residing in any of your towns, and they may eat it, or you may sell it to any other foreigner. But you are a people holy to the LORD your God. Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk."

Of course, Lev. 17:15 which when compared to Deut. 14:21 offers a seeming contradiction:
"When any person eats an animal which dies or is torn by beasts, whether he is a native or an alien (GER), he shall wash his cloths and bathe in water, and remain unclean until evening; then he will become clean."

However, Leviticus 17:15 says that the impurity of the act must be dealt with..and when seeing the entire context, it seems plain that part of the focus is upon those entering the temple since impurity defiles God's Temple (Lev 15:31; Num 19:13). It does not say it is forbidden for the sojourner and foreigner to eat the meat. Most kinds of impurity do not involve sin (childbirth, menstruation, caring for a corpse), although they all require purification of some type. If Israelites can sell unclean meat to non-Jews, it seems it is no sin for non-Jews to eat unclean meat. If they do it in the land, they simply need to practice purification as specified in Lev 17:15 (when the Temple is standing).

There are other things to consider in regards to sub-laws within the same universal/overarching Law that both Gentiles and Jews were under. Exodus 12:48 says that circumcision is optional for even a Sojourner living in Israel (much less a non-Jew living in Georgia or wherever other Non-Jews are). Exodus 31:13 says the Sabbath is a sign between Israel and God (not a universal command).

Derek Leman had some excellent discussions on the issue as seen in the following:

Most people discussing the subject of ONE Law don't really study what that ONE law really says---and it needs to be addressed. Gentiles and Jews will always be a part of the same family in Messiah---but being in the same family does not entail being the same at all parts and the Word of God never argued such, be it with Christ or the apostles and others. To make an issue out of it would be like one saying that parents have no right to choose not to treat all of their children the same when it comes to differing standards/expectations and that dad was somehow treating 10yr old Jimmy as if he's not part of the family because he assigned him to take out the garbage as chores while 8yr Sarah is simply required to clean dishes and the youngest to read. Having differing assignments/callings doesn't equate to having a lesser role in the family as another. It simply means that there's distinction between others, just as it has often been the case within the scriptures where the Lord operated differently with Gentiles at certain points than He did with the Hebrews.....both painting part of a larger picture that gloried the Lord and showed who He was

Very thankful for the work of Dan Juster and Russ Resnick who took time to address the scriptures point for point and show the reality of relationship between Gentiles/Jews (as seen here ). Additionally, although differing in opinion/stances from Dan Juster, John McKee did some excellent work in covering the issue. from the perspective of how many Gentiles---in the name of being the same as the Jews in requirements/standards and lifestyle---can actually practive a reverse form of Replacement Theology by trying to essentially become what the Lord meant to be a unique role for the Jewish community...as seen in "One Law as Replacement Theology." and other places ( here here, and here ). McKee’s organization, TNNOnline, is grounded in the Scriptures, Biblically conservative, free of pop theology, a bastion of apologetics and standing firm in the face of shifting ministerial alliances.

Ryan Lambert is another who's very excellent in the work he has done on the issue. His work, alongside Dr.Michael Brown, does give another interesting perspective on what it means to be united as Jew and Gentile under the Law. ..as seen here.

Asher Intrater is another one, as seen here, and here

Some see One Law in the sense of a Constitution, where there were differing laws given to certain groups even though all were under the U.S Constitution and subject to what it said. Just because one was not in the same category as another didn't mean that they were under one law...and the same can be said in regards to Jews and Gentiles. Many scriptures teach that not all of the Torah applies to Gentiles that it should be a simple conclusion. As said before, the Torah itself says Shabbat is only for Israel (Exod. 31:13), dietary law is only for Israel (Deut. 14:21), and circumcision is only for Israel (Gen. 17). Galatians 5 warns the Gentiles considering conversion that if they allow themselves to be circumcised they will have to keep the whole Torah (Gal. 5:3). Colossians 2:16 tells Gentiles not to let others judge them regarding a Sabbath day. Romans 14:5, discussing differences between Jews and Gentiles, notes that not all follow the Sabbath

We're meant to be "One" in Messiah:
Ephesians 2:3

One in Christ

11Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called "uncircumcised" by those who call themselves "the circumcision" (that done in the body by the hands of men)— 12remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. 13But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. 14For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, 15by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace, 16and in this one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. 17He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. 18For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

19Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household, 20built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

As David Stern made clear, the phrase "Gentile by Birth" makes clear that one who is a Gentile does not stop being a Gentile when joining the Jews/believing the Gospel, though it does change if he becomes a Jewish proselyte. Even though there is a real difference spiritually between Jew and Gentile, the reality remains that the Gentiles are no longer seperated and can join the Jewish people/be one with them without having to become Jewish/follow the customs of the Jews--as what makes the difference is FAITH. The cancelling of Eminity between Jew and Gentile can be found clearly in inspiring examples such as among Messianic Jewish believers and truly believing Arab Christians in the Land of Israel today---if ever being there. Where the world expects hate or one side trying to convert the other to its views (or at best, wary tolerance), they find a degree of trust and love from the Messiah that goes beyond politics.

On the enmity caused by the Torah, as it gave occassion to sin, the issues between Jews/Gentiles were with four components: (1) Gentile envy of the special status accorded by God to Israel in the Torah. (2) Jewish people being chosen (3) Gentile resentment of that pride (4). Mutual dislike of each others customs...but all of those factors were destroyed when the Messiah came to die for all sinners with is attoning death.

Good to know/thanks for the heads up. In that event, one can always google it and find the same.

If that's how one feels, that is their right to do so. IMHO, haven't seen any real credible evidence to show where what they note is not accurate (and I take seriously the advice of others who are friends with John McKee/advocate for him like Messianic Mommy and others have before in #9 , #51 #56 #117 and #164 ), nor have I seen that TNN is grounded solely in focus of the dollar bill or that it's any different than many other Hebrew Roots organizations/Messianic ministries involved with financial support. Much of their material is free/was given out without charge for a long time...although it's unfortunate that some of it isn't public anymore.

Actually, the various laws applied at different times are given to specific people groups. Plus, the law given to females are different then the law given to males. The law given to free men is different then those given to slaves. The law given to those who live in the land of Israel is different then those given outside of the land of Israel.

For example, the Jewish people were only to marry Jewish people. By implication you could say, Gentiles should not marry Jewish people, but only non-Jewish people.

God did indeed give different laws to different people but the difference in laws does not imply that not everyone could be a part of God's people. Salvation is available to all, Jew or Gentile, man or woman, bond or free.

When you follow the Messiah, you're a Christ-Bearer (Christian).

How do you understand “Christian” to mean “Christ-bearer”? Do you have a reason for taking it that way? The –ian suffix nomrally refers to a person who belongs to something, whether a city (“Corinth” → “Corinthian”; “Thessaly” → “Thessalonian”) or a group of followers. A “Christian” is one who “belongs to, is associated with, or follows Christ.” It is not one who “bears” Christ. Such a designation would be Χριστόφορος (Christophoros, “Christ-bearer”) in Greek. This designation eventually became the name “Christopher,” which really does mean “Christ-bearer.” Similarly, we have the name Θεόφορος (Theophoros, “God-bearer”) coming to us from antiquity.

Here is a list of other words that end in –an or –ian.

Semantics, as nothing you noted addresses where early Jewish believers noted themselves to be Christian and used it in the context of bearing/reflecting Christ. It'd be like saying one's American and then taking issue with that when someone says they bear the American spirit/pledge upon them as they represent.

There is something specific that alot of modern Christians do which is called 'Judaizing' ... I'm not exactly sure what that means yet.

The term “Judaize” comes into English directly from Greek Ἰουδαΐζειν Ioudaïzein. It literally means to “do as the Jews.” In Paul’s confrontation with Peter described in Galatians 2, Paul accused him of “living in a Gentile way and not in a Jewish way” (2:14 – ἐθνικῶς καὶ οὐκ Ἰουδαϊκῶς ζῇ&#962, and then stated that he was guilty of trying to make Gentiles “do as the Jews” (ibid. – Ἰουδαΐζει&#957. This is the earliest reference to “Judaizing” in the New Testament (Galatians probably being the first book ever published by a Christian). The compulsion in the expression is not in the word “Judaize,” as has been stated in this thread. This compulsion is found in the term that precedes it, that is ἀναγκάζεις you make it necessary. Was Peter trying to force Gentiles to be circumcised in Galatians 2? No, the issue there was dietary law. Before “certain men” came from James, Peter used to eat with the Gentiles, but once they arrived and started to make separations, Peter pulled away and refused to eat their food or eat at their tables. Thus, he set up requirements that any believer with whom he would have table fellowship must eat kosher – in the Jewish way – and he set up (along with the majority of believers from Jerusalem) certain separations between Jew and non-Jew that would have to be maintained in order to keep fellowship together. Paul called this hypocrisy and resisted it strongly. He admitted outright that while having fellowship with non-Jews, Peter was living in a Gentile way (ἐθνικῶς... ζῇ&#962, and in Paul’s estimation this was the only way to avoid hypocrisy – to break down the dividing wall between Jew and Gentile and to live like Gentiles without Torah. Anyone who attaches Torah keeping to their faith has made their faith vain and have cut themselves off from Christ. Paul makes that clear.

Then you’re making up your own meaning of the word. It means “one who does things in a Jewish way” or “lives in a Jewish way.” You can’t get past that, since it is the meaning of the word.

I cannot help but see Paul agreeing with your reasoning but not with your conclusions. Paul would agree that it’s all or nothing. Either Gentiles and Jews are in the same boat and have the same relationship to God, or they are not and do not. Yet, his reasoning would take him the other direction – not that Gentiles should do as the Jews, but that Jews should do as the Gentiles (those who come to faith). Gentiles before faith were chained in service to elemental forces and primitive beliefs and ways of thinking. Faith releases them from such servitude, freeing them to live a life of love and devotion to their fellows (“love your neighbor as yourself”), and love itself becomes the prime law. Jews who are slaves to Torah observance, once they become believers in Jesus, are freed from their slavery just as the Gentiles are freed from their slavery. All come to Christ from slavery in order to be free, in order to serve one another and God in freedom and love. No one should add any shackle of slavery, whether to elementals or to legal codes, which would violate the freedom that is in God through Christ. This is Paul’s position throughout his letters, and he would have opposed the idea that Jews (let alone Gentiles!) should be obligated to Torah observance – whether dietary, customary or cultic.

In your post above, you have misrepresented the etymology and meaning of the term “Christian.”
Incorrect, as meaning is determined by the context others use the term in. Believers in the early church used the term "Christian" to mean "Christ-Bearer" and that was shared often...simultaneously with being identified as a "little Christ". No different than someone saying they're "black" and not having others assume they meant that they have no color by the absolute use of the word. It'd be misrepresentation for another to come along/accuse someone saying they're black by saying "YOU'RE NOT TECHNICALLY BLACK!!!!!! You're BROWN!!!" since they don't understand the basics of words changing context. The same would apply if someone saw another say that they are Afro-American (as was often used by people in the black power movements ) or say they're Afro-Hispanic and then claiming they misrepresent others because they didn't claim they were "black" exclusively...even though it's obvious that being black is a part of their identity.

One can argue the same thing with the use of the term "Negro" and the ways it is used/has changed meaning based on context rather than strict etymology---from identifying a group proud of the roots (as with the Harlem Renaissance or "New Negro Renaissance" from the early 1900s) to demeaning a group of people when calling them "Negros" ..and simply using the word within the language of Spanish to indicate color. More was discussed before years ago when it came to the etymology of the term "gay" and the ways it has differing meanings just as the term "black" (shared here and here and here)--and apart from understanding the culture a word came from, one will never understand what misrepresentation is about.

The same principle applies to the term "Christian"....and that is why it was noted that it's semantical trying to say that a "Christian" is different from being a "Christ-bearer" (Christophoros), as terms are often used interchangeably with the same principle illustrated in differing ways. One bearing Christ is connected to Christ, just as one belonging to Christ REFLECTS Christ and is called to represent him. For when you bear the name of someone (just as a coin bears the IMAGE of the one in charge/having precedent, like Roman coins having the face of Caesar on it), then you show your allegiance to them and that you belong to them. THis is the principle of being IMITATORS of God and Christ ( 1 Thessalonians 2:14, Ephesians 5:1 , etc). No different than one saying that being a Christian/follower of Christ is equivalent with being a "child of the light" (John 12:35-37/ Ephesians 5:7-9/1 Thessalonians 5:4-6 ) or a "child of God" ( Romans 8:13-15 , Romans 8:18-20 , Galatians 3:25-27 , Philippians 2:14-16 , 1 John 3:1-3 , 1 John 5:1-3 , Luke 20:35-37 )--as Christ is present throughout as the focus and the one whom His followers belong to/represent.

Messianic Jew Alan Hirsch noted the issue when it came to the meaning of what it meant to belong to Christ and be a follower of Christ/one who bears him (as seen here and here). And for other good reads on the issue:

I Peter 4:14-16
If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. 16 However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.

Christians suffered and were persecuted exactly because they were Christians and they ruffled many feathers in the first centuries. They refused to worship the emperorer and they died for their faith. They weren’t persecuted because of the name, but rather they were persecuted for who they were.

It is important to understand the etymology behind the term "Christian" , as the Biblical meaning of the name "Christian" is "adherent of Christ." The disciples were formally called Christians first in Antioch (Acts 11:26), and later Agrippa recognized that to believe what Paul preached would have made him a Christian (Acts 26:28).
Acts 26:25-30

25 “I am not insane, most excellent Festus,” Paul replied. “What I am saying is true and reasonable. 26 The king is familiar with these things, and I can speak freely to him. I am convinced that none of this has escaped his notice, because it was not done in a corner. 27 King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know you do.”

28 Then Agrippa said to Paul, “Do you think that in such a short time you can persuade me to be a Christian?”

29 Paul replied, “Short time or long—I pray to God that not only you but all who are listening to me today may become what I am, except for these chains.”
30 The king rose, and with him the governor and Bernice and those sitting with them.

Peter accepted the name as in itself a basis for persecution. Thus gradually a name imposed by Gentiles who did not believe in Christ was adopted by the disciples of Jesus/Yeshua. Some Jews referred to Christ's followers as "the Nazaene sect" (Acts 24:5), and Paul, when he was himself a persecutor, had identified them as those "who belonged to the Way" (Acts 9:2). The Latin suffix - ianus was often usd with the name of the slave's owner (e.g., a slave of Iulius might be called Iulianus). The apostles wrote of themselves as "servants" (slaves) of Christ (Romans 1:1, James 1:1, II Peter 1:1, Jude 1, Revelation 1:1), and the New Testament variously calls the followers of Christ "brothers" (Acts 14:2), "disciples" (Acts 6:1-2), "Saints" (Acts 9:13, Romans 1:7, II Corinthians 1:2), "believers" (I Timothy 4:12),"the Church of God" (Acts 20:28) and "all who call on the Lord's name" (Acts 9:14).
